Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist ANDERS OSBORNE has announced details about his forthcoming 12th record, Spacedust & Ocean Views. Set for release on Back On Dumaine Records, the record is a hauntingly plaintive album of redemption and recovery, an honest musical document from the roots-rock veteran.
The album's first single, "Lafayette," was inspired by the longtime New
Orleans resident's love of Louisiana and was revealed exclusively via American Songwriter magazine. Listen
here. "The inspiration for 'Lafayette' came while driving home from Dockside Studios and missing it right away," Osborne says. "The Vermilion River, my friends, the food, the music, all of it. Always hard to leave that place."
Anders Osborne is a map of intensely felt, passionately engaged living, a fractured but healing topography of heartbreak and hope for fellow travelers to explore. He's traveled the world, playing guitar along the way and eventually landing in New Orleans, where he started writing and recording, releasing his first album in 1989.
Osborne tours relentlessly, which has resulted in an enthusiastic fan base. He recently wrapped up a wild trek with the North Mississippi Allstars, and they co-released the
Freedom & Dreams album in 2015. Of that project, Glide magazine said, "Both the
North Mississippi Allstars and Osborne have been embraced by fans and critics for their high-spirited ability to capture the heart of the
Southern musical tradition within genre-crossing recordings and performances that are original, vital and contemporary (2/19/15)." USA Today has praised his music, saying "The relentless approach amplifies the anguished lyrics, which appear to be about the death of a loved one or a relationship torn asunder or perhaps a spiritual crisis (4/10/12)."
Osborne's music is redolent of the blues bathed in West Coast sunshine and brotherly compassion, a torchbearer for rock 'n' roll with blood in its veins and a heart in its hands. His long awaited new full-length, Spacedust & Ocean Views, offers up graceful songwriting and signature guitar work on one of the strongest releases in his storied career. A strong sense of place runs through the album. From an evocation of geography to a questioning of one's place in the universe, big ideas are condensed in thoughtful, smoothly swinging ways. It's the album his fans have been waiting for--one that only he can deliver.
"These twelve songs speak about places dear to me, places I feel something profound about, but there's also the presence of the universe,"explains Osborne. "I think one of the main struggles we all face is the separation from unity. I want to understand how I can feel unified with the world and others, with the universe writ large. I can arrange the ideas intellectually but the feeling of longing remains. The whole thing is a mystery, sometimes a sad, baffling mystery and sometimes very enchanting, but overall I just don't understand and want to desperately. That's what this music is, an attempt to understand it all."
