This September, Three Square Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will observe the seventh annual Hunger Action Month -- an initiative designed to raise awareness on the issue of hunger and encourage the public to join the movement to help end it.

Companies and individuals will join together to show support through grants, donations, events, volunteerism and social media campaigns to help the 1 in 6 people who face hunger in America -- including more than 305,000 people here in Southern Nevada.

#SPOONTEMBER
On Thursday, Sept. 3 aka "Go Orange Day," Southern Nevada residents are encouraged to support Three Square by participating in #Spoontember, a social media activation designed to engage the public and raise awareness of hunger and the 49 million Americans who don't know where they'll find their next meal. #Spoontember supporters can share an "orange spoon selfie" - an image of themselves balancing a spoon on their nose - on their social media accounts tagging @threesquareLV and #Spoontember.

Looking for orange spoons for that Spoontember spoon selfie? Cheeky, a paper and plastic tableware company, will be sell orange flatware at all Target stores throughout the month of September with partial proceeds benefitting Feeding America.

HUNGER ACTION MONTH EVENTS
The LINQ Promenade will "go orange" on Thursday, Sept. 3 as Flour & Barley Brick Oven Pizza, Chayo Mexican Kitchen, O'Sheas Casino, Squeeze Fresh Cocktails, Guy Fieri's Vegas Kitchen and Bar, and 3535 serve special menu items with partial proceeds benefitting Three Square. In addition to these offerings, the High Roller will be ceremoniously lit orange to help celebrate the day and further raise awareness.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) football fans can ensure a rebel victory over the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Wolfpack off the field by donating to the UNLV vs. UNR virtual food drive. The winner will be announced after the big game on Oct. 3. Those interested in donating should visit www.threesquare.org, click the "Give Now" button on the homepage, fill in the donor information, and in the "Comments" field include "UNLV" or "Rebels."

In late September, members of the Three Square Culinary Council will volunteer in the community kitchen. The Council will work together to produce meals for Three Square's Kids Cafe program, which provides meals to children in after-school enrichment programs.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AND INITIATIVES
Locally owned and operated company Tortillas Inc. is doing its part to "Chip Away Hunger." Throughout September and Ocrober, partial proceeds from specially marked packages of Tortillas Inc. products will benefit Three Square. Tortillas Inc. products can be found at Albertsons, 7-11, Cardenas Markets, Fresh & Easy, Haggen, La Bonita, Mariana's, Sprouts, Walmart and many other stores throughout the valley. For a complete list of locations, visit www.tortillasinc.com.

Through the end of September, Smith's Food & Drug Stores shoppers can "Pour It Forward" by donating $1, $3 or $5 at checkout to provide nutrient-rich milk to local Las Vegas families. Donations are also collected through bringinghopetothetable.com/PourItForward.

For the second year, Nevada Public Radio (NVPR) will go above and beyond to support Three Square prior to and during its upcoming fall membership campaign. When listeners re-up or become new members at a level of $100 or higher and select the "social good" option, instead of receiving a traditional "thank you" the Bennett Family Foundation and AARP Nevada will donate dollars to Three Square. The goal is to provide an additional 80,000 meals to those battling hunger in Southern Nevada.

The Mayors of Southern Nevada, Weight Watchers of Las Vegas and Three Square join together to challenge the Las Vegas community children to adopt healthy breakfast habits. Get involved in the Great Breakfast Challenge by enjoying breakfast time with family, friends and co-workers; talking about how breakfast impacts alertness and physical well-being; and sharing photos on social media using #GreatBreakfastChallenge.

For the fourth straight year, Bank of America will partner with Feeding America to fight hunger. For every dollar donated to Three Square during Feeding America's "Give A Meal" campaign, (Sept. 1- Dec. 31, 2015), the Bank of America Charitable Foundation will give $2 more.

In honor of Hunger Action Month, thanks to a $5,000 grant from Anthem Insurance and Feeding America, Three Square will be able to provide additional fresh produce to a local mobile pantry on Wednesday, Sept. 16. More than 40 percent of Three Square's food distribution is made up of fresh produce.
