The Delta - the Wicker Park restaurant focusing on Mississippi Delta-style red hot tamales and craft cocktails - will host a tamale eating contest fundraiser to benefit Major League Baseball star Curtis Granderson's charity starting at 6pm on Monday, January 8.
All money raised from an on-site raffle, sales from Cutwater Spirits ready to drink canned alcoholic beverages, and the $20 competitor entry fee to participate in the tamale eating contest will go directory to Grand Kids Foundation (http://www.grandkids.org) - which teaches kids the power of education, fitness, and nutrition. Granderson, a Chicago native and longtime close friend of The Delta's owner Eldridge Williams, will emcee the event.
The tamale eating contest will feature 20 competitors, and those wanting to compete can register and pay the $20 entry fee via this link: https://eatmoretamales.brownpapertickets.com
Four heats of five competitors each will get to eat as many of The Delta's Mississippi-style red hot tamales they can in five minutes. The winners of each of the four heats will then compete in the finals where they will have 61 seconds to eat as many of of The Delta's Mississippi-style red hot tamales. The 61-second time limit in the finals is a homage to U.S. Route 61 - also known as the "Blues Highway" that spans the The Delta region's "tamale trail" that stretches from Memphis to Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Each of the four heat winners will receive a gift certificate to The Delta, and the grand champion will also win a trophy.
