Review: THE NUTCRACKER at the the Artscape Theatre Centre Is a Lush, Festive Treat
by Jaime Uranovsky - December 24, 2024

In December 2022, I had the honour of seeing Veronica Paeper and Cape Town City Ballet’s THE NUTCRACKER. The same talented production team returns this season to stage this timeless ballet again. The result is just as beautiful as when I watched it two years ago. While this year’s production takes place in the Theatre rather than the larger Opera House, the production does not lose any of the magic from the 2022 production.

by Carissa Chesanek - December 22, 2024

These days the Nutcracker can take many forms, from funny to sultry, and everything in between. That is the case with The Hard Nut presented by BAM and Mark Morris Dance Group in Brooklyn. Based on the book by E.T.A. There is no better time to be had than what The Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre offers audiences at its five-week residency at the New York City Center. The show, which consists of a rotating roster of new, returning and classic works, should be mandatory holiday viewing. It is White Christmas or The Rockettes, but for audiences who want less razzle dazzle and more joy, depth and authenticity.

by Valerie-Jean Miller - December 18, 2024

Thru an intricately woven saga spanning many eras of time, the Star of HEXEN, An Ancestial Witch Play, Dreya Weber, an actress, singer, dancer, writer, lyricist, director and aerial artist, takes us on a magical, mystical series of events beginning many centuries ago with three of her ancestors she came to know as Hildegard (1580-1658), Hypatta (370-415 AD) and Cherry Rose Susanna (1889-1953). Her knowledge of these three was obtained through her mother’s research into their family’s mattrilinial lineage. As her strength, energy, skill, and lightness of being embody each character from her distant past, we come to know their ties to Dreya, through the many creative, explorative scenarios presented.

Review: NUTCRACKER, London Coliseum
by Vikki Jane Vile - December 13, 2024

It has been some time coming. For nearly 15 years English National Ballet enthusiastically performed Wayne Eagling’s Nutcracker, a traditional but rather staid production with a fuzzy narrative and lacking opportunity for the company to shine.

Review: Nutcracker Rouge Entices Bushwick For Another Glamorous Holiday Season
by Carissa Chesanek - December 10, 2024

There’s the Nutcracker and then there is the Nutcracker Rouge. While the traditional ballet is more formal and family-friendly, Nutcracker Rouge is anything but, making for an alluring adult-only spectacle of incredible talent mixed with naughty decadence and a bit of raunchy humor, too. Nutcracker Rouge is not only a ballet but part circus and burlesque, reconstructing everything that we once thought of the original Christmas performance and creating something new and sparkly.
