The Wayne State Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance welcomes Anna Sperber as the Fall 2015 Company One guest artist. Sperber will be holding classes with Dance Department students from October 29th-November 2nd as she creates a short repertory piece for Company One. This new work will be performed in the Allesee Dance Theatre on Monday November 2nd at 12:00 p.m. Admission to the event is Free.
Anna Sperber is a native of Brooklyn, NY, where she is currently based and has been creating and presenting work for 14 years, including eight full-length pieces. Throughout her creative practice she has collaborated extensively with composers, live music, and visual designers. Her work has been presented by The Kitchen, Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Chocolate Factory Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, Movement Research at Judson Church, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Dixon Place, CATCH in PS 122's COIL Festival and The Ronald Feldman Gallery, among many other venues. Her most recent full-length work premiered as part of the inaugural season of the Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center at Gibney Dance, NYC. This past summer she was commissioned by American Dance Festival (ADF) to create a piece for the Footprints series.
Anna has an been an Artist in Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (2013-15), LMCC Process Space residency on Governors Island (2011), Movement Research (2006-08), and in 2008-09, she was the Resident Choreographer of Sugar Salon, a program of WAX in partnership with the Barnard College Department of Dance. Her work has also received support from NYSCA Dance Program Public Commissioning Funds (2007), DCA Re-grant through the Brooklyn Arts Council (2010, 2014), Live Music For Dance/ New Music USA Grant (2013, 2015), and a grant from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation (2014).Wayne State University Dance Company
The Wayne State University Dance Company serves as the primary source for preparing dance majors for the dance profession by offering opportunities in choreography and performance. Both companies connect with the community through outreach programs including lecture demonstrations, master classes, concerts and collaborative projects for both the public and private sectors, promoting the art of dance locally, nationally and on a global level.
