The Yard to Present Malpaso Dance Company This August

Malpaso Dance Company returns in 2016 to the scene of their overwhelming, standing- room-only triumph in the 2015 YARD ARTS season with two (2) new and different programs - 1) a sparkling repertory of Cuban and American works on Tuesday, August 16th at the MVPAC in Oak Bluffs (at 7 PM); and 2) a work in progress, Dreaming of Lions, based on Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea," developed in part in a Yard 2016 Offshore Creation Residency, on Thursday, August 18th, at The Yard's Patricia Nanon Theater (2 performances, at 11 AM and 8 PM).

As Cuba opens to the world and especially, long overdue, to the United States, Malpaso is building a bi-lateral repertory of works by some of the finest contemporary dance-makers of our time, including Americans Trey McIntyre and Ronald K. Brown (the latter presented by The Yard at the MVPAC in 2015, in association with the Run&Shoot MV African American Film Festival) and Malpaso's own gifted young artistic director, Osnel Delgado.

After its early successes in New York, at Jacob's Pillow, and on Martha's Vineyard, Malpaso will now tour to 13 American cities in 2016-2017. The Yard is the first stop . . .

Based in Havana, Cuba, Malpaso Dance Company is committed to bringing Cuban contemporary dance into the 21st century by collaborating with top international choreographers and nurturing new voices in Cuban choreography. The company's core artistic vision is led by resident repertory choreographer Osnel Delgado, and the company develops its work in a collective creative process. Malpaso was founded in 2012 by Delgado, Daileidys Carrazana, and Fernando Sae?z, and consists of 10 extraordinary dancers.

Malpaso Dance Company is the recipient of The Yard's 2016 Offshore Creation Residency, which enables the artists to pursue their explorations of what matters most.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

FERNANDO SA?EZ (Founder and Executive Director) graduated from the School of Performing Arts at the Superior Institute of Arts (ISA) in Havana in 1988. He is a founder and actor of Estudio Teatral de Santa Clara, was the head of the sociocultural development project in Las Terrazas, Pinar del Rio from 1993 to 1997, and has served on the staff of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba since 1998. He is also a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors.

DAILEIDYS CARRAZANA (Founder and Dancer) graduated from the National Ballet School in Havana in 2003. She was a member of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba from 2003 to 2011, before founding Malpaso with Osnel Delgado Wambrug. Daile has worked with choreographers such as Mats Ek, Jan Linkens, Samir Akika, Pedro Ruiz, and Isidro Rolando, among others.

OSNEL DELGADO (Founder, Dancer, and Choreographer) danced with Danza Contemporanea de Cuba from 2003 to 2011, before founding Malpaso. He has worked with choreographers Mats Ek, Rafael Bonachela, Kenneth Kvarnstro?m, Ja Linkens, Itzik Galili, Samir Akika, Pedro Ruiz, Isidro Rolando, and George Cespedes, among others. Delgado has created works for DCC, Rakatan, and Ebony Dance of Cuba. He is a 2003 graduate of the National Dance School of Havana, where he is also a professor of dance studies.

Ronald K. Brown (Choreographer, Why you Follow) has been making dances since the second grade, growing up in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York. He studied extensively with Mary Anthony, whose technique includes a combination of Martha Graham and Hanya Holm. Brown performed as a dancer with Jennifer Muller/The Works. Muller, Bebe Miller, and Maguy Marin were very influential in his work. His dances derive from his interpretation of the human condition and refer to numerous cultural sources including history, tradition, modern and urban dance movement, and dance forms from Latin America, the Caribbean, and AfricA. Brown has choreographed for and set works on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Jeune Ballet d'Afrique Noire, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Def Dance Jam Workshop, Ballet Hispanico, and Philadanco. His theater credits include ReGina Taylor's award-winning play, Crowns, and the Tony Award-winning revival of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess starring Audra McDonald.

TREY MCINTYRE (Choreographer, Under Fire) was born in Wichita, Kansas, and trained at North Carolina School of the Arts and Houston Ballet Academy. At Houston Ballet, he was appointed Choreographic Apprentice in 1989 and then, in 1995, he became the company's Choreographic Associate. He has created more than 100 works for companies such as New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Stuttgart Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and Pennsylvania Ballet, and founded his own company, Trey McIntyre Project, in 2005. McIntyre's work has been featured in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, PBS News Hour, People Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, and many others. He is also a filmmaker and photographer, currently working on a documentary and collection of photos, while continuing to work with companies all over the world.

Mission: The Yard supports artists in both their creative processes and social instrumentality through paid research residency, public performance, and long- term educational and community engagement across all ages and diverse cultural populations of Martha's Vineyard, and in broad application to New England and the nation.

In so doing: The Yard promotes creation, education, and community building through artistic practice-with a special emphasis on contemporary dance and related collaborative forms-in the defining rural/island environment of Martha's Vineyard.

The Yard acts, on behalf of its core commitments, as an active collaborator, co- commissioner, and touring partner with other leading institutions across a regional/national/international context to raise up a "culture of cultures" ecology that reflects-and benefits-the demographic life and times of the island of Martha's Vineyard and the country.
