/we / is a collective study on gender identity through a femme-identifying lens that rids the binary, embraces the inner self and builds without walls. States of transcendence, embodiment, neutrality and autonomy are explored as MICHIYAYA Dance interweaves thoughts, memories, and dreams.
Choreographed by co-artistic director Anya Clarke with visual and contextual design by co-artistic director Mitsuko Verdery, /we / features the full company of six femme-identifying dance artists: Belinda Adam, Breeanah Breeden, Stephanie Carlos, Nu ria Martin Fandos, Hannah Seiden, Alexandra Wood, with live sound by performance duo slowdanger. /we / also features lighting design by Alejandro Fajardo and projection design by Jess Medenbach.
"/we / presents journeys through challenging binaries, as the dancers explore queer magic, sexuality, taboo, instinct, intuition and prejudice in the face of social norms," Julieta Varela (Medium). "The dancers, the innovative staging, the complex issues tackled with grace-they all combine to produce work that is provocative and deeply felt," wrote Mary Kaye-Schilling.
