The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is proud to present Gallim Dance, under the artistic direction of founder Andrea Miller, from December 3-6. The company will perform the world premiere of Miller's latest work W H A L E during this limited 5-performance engagement. Tickets range in price from $10-$50 and can be purchased through JoyceCharge at www.Joyce.org, or by calling 212-242-0800. Please note: ticket prices are subject to change. The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street.
W H A L E, Andrea Miller's 10th work for Gallim Dance, uses her radical physical language and impulsive narrative pace to juxtapose love, sex and domesticity. This piece, set to music mixed and performed live on stage by composer and sound designer Jordan Chiolis, trails the human pursuit to love and be loved, and, through moments of emotional vulnerability, sensual abandonment and spiritual tribulation, navigates the expectations, anxiety and forgiveness surrounding this struggle. Both intimate and cinematic, W H A L E invites an exploration of one of life's most essential themes, guided by Miller's virtuosic and unpredictable choreography. In addition to composer Jordan Chiolis, Miller collaborated with lighting designer Nicole Pearce and costume designer Jenny Lai in creating W H A L E, which comes to life in the bodies and souls of the dancers of Gallim Dance.
Performances of the world premiere of Gallim Dance's W H A L E, a presentation of The Joyce Theater Foundation, will take place from December 3-6 at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street) according to the following schedule: Thursday-Friday 8pm; Saturday 2pm & 8pm; Sunday 2pm. Curtain Chat, a free post-performance talkback with the artists, will take place on Friday, December 4. This enlightening discussion is open to all patrons attending that evening's performance. Tickets range in price from $10 to $50 and can be purchased throughJoyceCharge at (212) 242-0800 or online at www.Joyce.org. Please note: ticket prices are subject to change. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc. , a non-profit organization, has proudly served the dance community and its audiences for three decades. The founders, Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea, which opened as The Joyce Theater in 1982. The Joyce Theater is named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. One of the only theaters built by dancers for dance, The Joyce Theater has provided an intimate and elegant home for more than 320 domestic and international companies. The Joyce has also commissioned more than 130 new dances since 1992. In 2009, The Joyce opened Dance Art New York (DANY) Studios to provide affordable studios for rehearsals, auditions, classes, and workshops for independent choreographers, non-profit dance companies, and the dance/theater communities. New York City public school students and teachers annually benefit from The Joyce's Dance Education Program, and adult audiences get closer to dance through informative post-performance Curtain Chats. The Joyce Theater now features an annual season of approximately 48 weeks with over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 135,000.
Leadership support for The Joyce Theater's 2015-2016 season has been received from the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust.
Generous support for this engagement was provided through a grant from The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, Inc. to encourage the performance of New York City-based companies at The Joyce Theater.
The Joyce Theater's Dance Presentation Program is supported by a grant award from the National Endowment for the Arts; and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; as well as supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council with special thanks to Council Member Corey Johnson.
Major support has been provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Ford Foundation, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Pasculano Foundation, The SHS Foundation, and The Shubert Foundation.
