Miami City Ballet's 2016-2017 season opens October 21 with the classic full-evening ballet Giselle, and adds five major works to the company's repertoire, including the highly anticipated world premiere of The Fairy's Kiss by Alexei Ratmansky.
Says Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez, "Miami City Ballet is committed to bringing our audiences the very best of dance's past, present and future. From a new narrative ballet by today's most in-demand classical choreographer, Alexei Ratmansky, to four major company premieres, to several well-loved revivals, our new season offers a wide range of the best that dance has to offer, performed by our brilliant and highly individual MCB dancers."
The 2016-2017 Season begins October 21 with performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, before moving on to the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach and the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale; all repertory programs danced to live music provided by the distinguished Opus One Orchestra.
Program One opens with the 19th century's greatest romantic ballet and one of the most beloved ballets of all time - Giselle. The title role of the innocent peasant girl turned mad by her lover's betrayal, returning from the dead to save him from death, is every ballerina's dream role - requiring both outstanding acting skills and impeccable technique.
Program Two ushers in 20th-century dance with three strong company premieres alongside one of MCB's signature works. Opening with Peter Martins' very first ballet, the raw and witty Calcium Light Night, MCB continues to expand its Jerome Robbins repertory with Glass Pieces, danced to a thrilling score by Philip Glass. Carousel Pas de Deux by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, a major choreographer new to MCB, is a poignant duet adapted from the popular musical, and set to music by the great Richard Rodgers. George Balanchine's ravishing Serenade rounds out the program.
Program Three moves into the 21st century with a world premiere by one of the most important choreographic voices working today. Alexei Ratmansky returns for his second commission with MCB, The Fairy's Kiss, based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and set to a melodious, Tchaikovsky-inspired score by Igor Stravinsky. A new Balanchine acquisition, Walpurgisnacht Ballet, set to Charles Gounod's passioNate Faust music, contains a bravura ballerina role and a corps of 24 alluring women. And Christopher Wheeldon's contemporary Polyphonia returns for an encore after its popular reception in 2013.
Finally: Program Four brings this stimulating season to a climax with one of Paul Taylor's best-loved works, the baroque-influenced Arden Court, alongside two Balanchine masterpieces: Divertimento No. 15, set to the music of Mozart, and his glorious tribute to Broadway, Who Cares?, featuring the music of his friend and collaborator George Gershwin.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker® returns in December to MCB's home venues. Miami City Ballet's production of The Nutcracker has become a beloved tradition throughout South Florida, and is the perfect holiday treat for the entire family, featuring a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes, the Sugar Plum Fairy and an epic battle between heroic toy soldiers and mischievous mice. This lavish production includes magnificent scenery, elaborate costumes and a blizzard of snow - all performed to the magical music of Tchaikovsky.
