Schimmel Center at Pace University presents Backhausdance with performances taking place on the evenings of February 27 and 28 and a special one-hour family matinee on February 28 at 2pm. Founded by Jennifer Backhaus in 2003, the company made its New York debut at Joyce SoHo's 2010 INBOUND Festival. The company will perform excerpts of Incandescent and the New York premiere of the full-length piece The Elasticity of the Almost, both choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus. The company's diverse repertory includes powerful, athletic dances, emotionally charged dramatic pieces, and whimsical, humorous glimpses at the human experience.

Incandescent explores light in both a physical and spiritual sense. The piece has dancers shifting through various configurations of hundreds of light bulbs suspended from above with creative lighting techniques which help express the spectrum of emotions they experience on their journey. The Elasticity of the Almost finds eight dancers ferociously moving amongst a shifting sea of red balls. The audience will be treated to an inside look at the creative process as the dancers attack each new moment with skill, passion, immediacy, and a sense of humor.

Backhausdance creates engaging, dynamic, and fluid dance works that explore human interactions and our relationship to the world around us. These themes are delivered though a rich tapestry of strong, athletic technique and subtle, nuanced gestures. Both works have a strong visual style, high in contrast and theatricality. Backhaus' gift brings together movement creation, sound score, lighting, and costume design.

Ticket prices for Backhausdance at Schimmel Center at Pace University range from $29-$49 ($10-$25 for the family matinee). The performances will take place on Friday, February 27 at 7:30pm and Saturday, February 28 at 7:30pm, with a family matinee performance of The Elasticity of the Almost on Saturday, February 28 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased online at schimmel.pace.edu, by calling (866) 811-4111 or (212) 346-1715, or in person at Schimmel Center Box Office, open Monday-Friday from 1pm-6pm. Schimmel Center is located at 3 Spruce Street in downtown Manhattan.
