Roxey Ballet, voted New Jersey's favorite Dance Company, performs its first-ever 'Frankenstein' ballet from October 22-30. With choreography by Lees Hummel and Stephen K. Stone, they have conceived a contemporary adaptation of Mary Shelly's novel that mirrors the possibilities of the future.
Though "Frankenstein" stereotypically invokes a lumbering green man with bolts in his necks,
Mary Shelley never delivers a concrete description of the monster's appearance. Instead, she conjures images of the creature's ugliness within the reader's own mind. This premier of 'Frankenstein' will fuse the classic narrative of Dr. Frankenstein's efforts to build and animate a human with the timeless intrigue of the unknown. It is the story of the ugly duckling to an extreme, questioning the human instinct of facing what is similar to us, yet vastly unfamiliar, and crafted into a performance that asks if fear defines our monster.
The choreography will showcase the technical and artistic virtuosity of the Roxey Ballet Professional Company, which entered into its 22nd year this fall. It uses dance performance, media, and technology as components of the storytelling.
For those who have had an opportunity to see Roxey Ballet's renowned version of Bram Stroker's 'Dracula', this ballet will yet again serve up a nontraditional performance experience that blends a variety of theater and art experiences into a beautiful retelling of
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Electronic music and soundscapes by composer Michael Kallstrom will be paired with special lighting design by Jeffrey Goldstein.
All performances are held in Roxey Ballet's intimate Canal Studio, where dancers will be up-close with their audience and connect in this theatrical space. "If you haven't had a chance to see Roxey Ballet, there's no better time to introduce yourself to New Jersey and Pennsylvania's premier professional
Dance Company. This performance will also include the Roxey Ballet's trainees who are the future stars of the dance world," says Mark Roxey, artistic director of Roxey Ballet. A family-friendly option perfect for Halloween, Roxey Ballet will host numerous performances in the final weeks of October.
On October 14, Roxey Ballet will host a 'Frankenstein' sneak-peek for both press and public attendance during the seasonal Beer and Ballet event. RSVP is required.
