REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, presents the intoxicating dance-theater work Der Bau, by Isabelle Schad and Laurent Goldring, Saturday April 16 and Sunday April 17, 2016 at 8:30 p.m.

The event is presented in association with The Goethe-Institut's 2016/2017 United States Tour of European dance. The piece will also be performed in Chicago and Baltimore.

Created by Berlin-based choreographer Isabelle Schad and French artist Laurent Goldring, Der Bau is inspired by Franz Kafka's unfinished novella of the same title. With a mix of lush, ferocious, and sometimes spare movement, performed nude, Schad uses an animal's burrow as a metaphor for the human body. Kafka's labyrinth-described as a space derived from the body, and yet still belonging to it- is suggested by a large and commanding sheet of fabric, which is beautifully manipulated to dramatically alter the visual and physical relationship between body and space. Der Bau is the latest in a series of influential visual art collaborations by Schad and Goldring, both former dancers with the internationally acclaimed company Ultima Vez (Wim Vandekeybus), as well as noted dance innovators Olga Mesa, Felix Ruckert and Eszter Salamon.

About the Artists:

Isabelle Schad

Dancer and choreographer Isabelle Schad studied classical dance in Stuttgart and danced for several different choreographers before she started initiating her own projects in 1999, including Ultima Vez / Wim Vandekeybus, Olga Mesa, Angela Guerreiro, Felix Ruckert, Eszter Salamon. Since 1999, she has developed numerous own projects and dance performances in close collaboration with choreographers, performers, musicians and visual artists, which have been presented internationally in theatres, alternative places, galleries or festivals such as Tanz im August, Berlin, Internationale Tanzwochen Wien and Dashanzi International Arts Festival, Beijing. Her works are situated on the interface between dance, performance and the visual arts. Her research focuses on the body and its materiality; the relationship between bodies, (re)presentation, form and experience; practice as a learning process; community and political involvement - among others. She has co-initiated numerous projects/groups that searched for connections between various fields of research and practice, whereby production methods are also questioned by participants. She has co-conceived the Good Work-Project and works with Ben Anderson and Bruno Pocheron on directing several projects for the series, with Benoit Lachambre, Martin Belanger, Nuno Bizarro, Manuel Pelmus, Frédéric Gies, Hanna Hedman, which are as well presented internationally.

Laurent Goldring

Laurent Goldring was born and lives in Paris. After studying philosophy, he turned to photography and video art related to the world of dance and began to collaborate with choreographers. The raw material of his work is the body reduced to the sculptural form, devoid of meaning. Goldring's photography and film, frames the naked body in unusual postures and incongruous minimal movements, such as a contraction of a muscle, or a slight twist. By removing the body's features that identify it as human, Goldring somehow creates a new form, that is almost inhumane-the déconnoté body-the body without significance emerges, ridden of meanings, signs and themes. " Through his work, Goldring reflects on the history of representation (perfect body glorified by the Nazis, body camps, trenches, Hiroshima). He deconstructs the body image of the codes of representation: "Each image represents a body (naked) moving in a lack of space, lack of intent, where the connotations and meanings of a human body are blurred: where the global representations of the human figure, evidence that if the body can be formed, it can be dissolved in the formless.
