Bill Evans danced with Repertory Dance Theatre from 1967 to 1974 in which time he choreographed 13 pieces for the company, one of the most memorable being "Jukebox" in 1974. Evans grew up in Lehi, Utah and started creating his own pieces at the age of five. It was at that time in his life that the inspiration for "Jukebox" came along. Evans would create dances based on music and dance he heard on the radio at the time. Then, years later, he created a brand new piece based his perception as a child.
"I have been choreographing dances since 1952 when I was 11 years old. This work is built on movement passages I remember from dances I made during my adolescence in Lehi, Utah; and no attempt was made at historical accuracy. What you see is the aesthetic of a 12-year-old and the craft of a more experienced choreographer," Evans once said about the piece.
"Jukebox" consists of seven different sections with various characters, all using the music of Glenn Miller and his orchestra. Sections range from solos and duets to full company ensembles. "Our Love Affair," features a classical, yet funny take on the classic pair of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. "Little Brown Jug" is a fun jitterbug duet based on World War II social dances set in a classic malt shoppe.
Other sections include "Take the A Train," a rendition of Paula Kelly and the Modernaires as well as a solo with a tennis racket called "What's Your Story, Morning Glory?" The piece finishes with a parade of the classic characters to "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree."
Evans uses props and distinctive characters throughout the entire work in humorous and sentimental ways. Executive/Artistic Director, Linda C. Smith returns as the hysterical character, "the waitress," one which she performed to rave reviews (and laughter!) in past years. You won't want to miss this rare and unforgettable appearance.
In addition to "Jukebox," LIVELY audiences will also see a range of work from Susan Hadley ("Fin Amours") as well as Marina Harris ("Green Jello," "Tico Tico," and "Grooming and Hat"). And audiences may remember the thrilling "Bolero" by Joanie Smith that brought the house down during last season's Women of Valor: In the Spirit of Service.
Repertory Dance Theatre's, LIVELY will provide the time and place for audiences of all ages to enjoy some choreography "on the lighter side." And with tickets for only $10 (66% off a regularly priced RDT ticket) the entire family can afford a fun night out at the theater.
