Pilobolus Dance Company to Perform at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, 8/24

The groundbreaking and internationally acclaimed Dance Company, Pilobolus will perform at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, August 24 at 8:30pm. Tickets are $65 - $95 and can be purchased online at www.whbpac.org.

Modern dance has never been so magical and entertaining! Using the human body as a medium for expression, these superhuman artist/athletes draw influence from dance and acrobatics to create an ever-expanding body of work that's FUN for all ages! In keeping with its biological namesake - a sun-loving fungus - this award-winning company continues to grow towards the light. The well-known Dance Company has performed for crowds in over 64 countries live, and has been seen on television in commercials and programs such as the Academy Awards, NFL telecasts, Oprah, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and CBS' 60 Minutes. Pilobolus will perform their works, "Automaton," "Ocellus," "Molly's Not Dead," "Symbiosis," and "Licks."

"Automation" is a new collaboration (2012) with the internationally renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The result is a cyborg of a dance that questions the difference between human and machine. Somewhere between Tron and Bladerunner, "Automation" takes place in a mirrored world that allows us to view multiple angles at the same time. Deep emotions punctuate the intoxicating rhythms of the machine as we experience a journey through a time that seems yet to come.

"Ocellus" is a classic Pilobolus men's quartet revived from 1971 for the 2008 season, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces: Dance Initiative.

''Molly's Not Dead'' is one of Pilobolus' marvelously funny, ''shape'-making" works. The piece finds six dancers combining into alternatively funny and haunting creatures, many defying logistics of balance. The mock country-and-western music is by Walt Michael, Tom McCreesh and Tom (Harley) Campbell, and in its closing pastoral images, the piece looks better than ever.

"Symbiosis" is a male-female duet which traces the birth of a relationship between two creatures sinuously & sensuously intertwined. At once a Darwinian investigation and a love story, "Symbiosis" never ceases to surprise with its majesty and emotional depth.

"Licks," a high-octane romp, full of raw energy and berserk horseplay. A collaboration with choreographers Trish Sie and Renée Jaworski, and set to music by Nortec Collective, a Mexico-based electronica group, six dancers manipulate various lengths of rope. Sometimes they seem like cowboys lassoing calves, sometimes like gangs on a rumble, sometimes like spiders creating webs.
