Although the ROYAL DRUMMERS AND DANCERS OF BURUNDI gained Western acclaim in 1975 after being featured on Joni Mitchell's Grammy-nominated album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, they have been performing in Africa for many centuries. Originating as ceremonial performers for Burundian kings, this troupe plays to celebrate their culture and honor the sacred powers of the drums, which represent the powers of fertility and regeneration. The ROYAL DRUMMERS AND DANCERS OF BURUNDI have toured around the world since 1960. In fact, their performances inspirEd Thomas Brooman to organize the very first WOMAD festival in 1982. In addition to touring worldwide and sparking the World Music boom, the ROYAL DRUMMERS AND DANCERS OF BURUNDI have recorded three albums with the Real World Label.
