Northrop at the University of Minnesota presents Dorrance Dance with Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely in The Blues Project on Thu, Nov 19 at 7:30 pm. Led by Bessie Award and MacArthur "genius" grant-winner Michelle Dorrance, this tap dancing troupe will make their Northrop debut alongside blues/rock/folk performer Toshi Reagon and her band BIGLovely.
The Blues Project, a sizzling combination of terrific tap dance and live blues music, is a dynamic evening that will leave Northrop audiences tapping along with its irresistible rhythms. In addition to tap phenom Dorrance and her company of exceptional dancers, renowned soloists and co-choreographers of the evening Derick K. Grant and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards will both perform, making this dance performance one of the hottest in the Twin Cities this fall.
Founded by Michelle Dorrance in 2011, Dorrance Dance has been blasting away notions of what tap dance is, while honoring the history of this classic American dance form. The group has performed around the world to rave reviews, with The Boston Globe applauding its "inventive, electrifying take on tap." Recognizing her exciting work in the world of tap, the MacArthur Foundation recently awarded Michelle Dorrance one of their prestigious "Genius Grants," and she has been called "one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today" by The New Yorker.
Providing the live, high-energy soundtrack for the evening's show is composer Toshi Reagon and her band BIGLovely. Reagon, the daughter of Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Bernice Johnson Reagon and goddaughter of folk artist Pete Seeger, is an award-winning musician whose soulful vocals effortlessly match and propel the intensity presented on stage. She leads her band and the audience through a musical blend of blues, country, and rock 'n' roll.
Michelle Dorrance recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Watch her performance here.
