New York Live Arts presents the New York premiere of Emily Johnson/ Catalyst's SHORE in Lenapehoking (NYC), April 19 - 26. Known for "richly detailed dance-installations [that] are full of surprises" (The New York Times), Johnson brings her expansive installation to New York City for a week of events and performances that uniquely connect us to our land, our lives and each other.
The third part of a trilogy exploring the intricate terrain of memory, ancestry, identity, land and community, SHORE builds on these themes as introduced in the first two works of the trilogy: New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award-winning The Thank-you Bar (2011) and Niicugni (2013). Throughout the trilogy, Johnson has sought to question performance's ability to connect us-as individuals-to each other, our community and the land we live on. SHORE will be presented as a performance at Live Arts, and throughout the community with various gatherings and events taking place at an array of locations between April 19 and 26.
Created in four equal parts, SHORE celebrates spaces where we meet and merge: land and water, performance and audience, art and community and past, present and future. A work combining dance, live music and storytelling, SHORE's performance was conceived and choreographed by Johnson and directed by Ain Gordon. The work will be performed by dancers Aretha Aoki, Krista Langberg and Julia Bither, vocalist Christina Courtin, the SHORE Choir and a large cast of local dancers. Beginning at the nearby PS11, the performance starts with a communal journey to the Live Arts Theater.
In addition to SHORE's performance, the installation's three other elements include SHORE: Community Action (volunteerism) - a series of community work sessions in the Rockaways and on Governors Island involving the caretaking of land and water and dune restoration; SHORE: Story, a curated reading featuring local authors; and SHORE: Feast, a culminating potluck celebration in which participants share stories and the recipes of the dishes they bring to share. For complete details on all events, see listing information below.
This presentation of SHORE is made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
