The North Shore Civic Ballet (NSCB), a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, announces that Michaiah Fernandes has been awarded a scholarship to attend the Marblehead School of Ballet's (MSB) 2015 Summer Intensive in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Eleven-year-old Michaiah attends KIPP Academy Charter School in Lynn, Massachusetts and will enter sixth grade in the fall.
Passionate about dancing, Michaiah enjoys choreographing shows with her sisters. When she is not dancing, Michaiah can be found outside participating in different sports such as swimming.
The MSB's 2015 Summer Intensive features a specialized curriculum offering personalized training for youngsters of all levels of experience. Participants receive individual attention customized to their personal development. Classes are offered in ballet technique, stretch and strength, improvisation, rhythm, storytelling through movement and others.
"One of our primary goals is to encourage talented young dancers. The North Shore Civic Ballet provides scholarship support for young people who show the ability and promise to become dancers. An audition is required as is an application showing background, evidence of good work habits and financial need," said Toni Matsu, treasurer and a member of the NSCB's board of trustees.
Scholarship applicants must also demonstrate a genuine passion and talent for dance. Award recipients are expected to make the dance schedule a priority, while maintaining average or above average grades in school. Consistent attendance and enthusiastic participation is expected in every class.
The North Shore Civic Ballet Company provides support and opportunities for up and coming dancers to attend the Marblehead School of Ballet. "Scholarships give youngsters who might not otherwise experience the joy of dance a chance to do so," explained Judy Moynihan, a member of the NSCB's board of trustees.
MSB graduates have continued their dance studies at some of the most prestigious ballet companies worldwide, including Eliot Field, Alvin Ailey, Houston Ballet, Metropolitan Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet de Lorraine in France, among others. Alumni have graduated from leading postsecondary institutions, such as Boston Conservatory, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, University North Carolina School for the Arts, University of Utah, and others and pursued careers in a range of fields globally.
