"Art of Sense and Soul" Performance Brings Near East Dance, Music and The Arabian Nights to Life at West Orange JCC tonight, October 20.
JSDD's Wellness, Arts, Enrichment (WAE) Center launches the 8th season of its Global Beat Series with "The Art of Sense and Soul," a performance of dance, music and story from the Near East by Mosaic Dance Theater Company (MDTC). The production is scheduled for 3 PM on Sunday, October 20, at JCC's Maurice Levin Theatre, 760 Northfield Ave., West Orange, NJ 07052. A pre-show workshop introducing techniques for using personal experiences as artistic expression starts at 2 PM. All events are free of charge.
In addition to favorites from MDTC's diverse repertory, the Company will premier The Ebony Horse: A Tale from the Arabian Nights, a dance/theater presentation featuring a heroic prince, a beautiful princess, and a magical, mechanical, flying horse. This oft-anthologized tale is adapted and directed by Morgiana Celeste Varricchio and choreographed by Samara Adell. Also featured are Red Desert, an interpretive work exploring the conflicting emotions of a woman living in a restrictive society, and Raks Al-Sa'id, a buoyant work of folkloric dance from Upper Egypt. On-stage musical accompaniment will be provided by popular Arabic musicians from the NY/NJ metropolitan area.
JSDD's Wae Center and MDTC, along with The Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC in West Orange, have joined forces in a special collaboration symbolizing the diversity that each of the organizations incorporates into its mission. This performance represents the culminaton of regular workshops conducted by Mosaic 's Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Samara Adell, and Adriana Rosa with students at the Wae Center, whose resulting artwork will be on display outside the theater from noon to 6 PM.
"The Art of Sense and Soul" will be presented free of charge to the general public, and there is NO reserved seating.
