Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' global smash hit musical Mamma Mia! "dances and jives" back to Broadway on Thursday, November 29 at the Winter Garden Theatre (1634 Broadway).
Seen by over 30 million people around the world, Mamma Mia!, is celebrating 6 sold-out years on Broadway and is currently playing record-breaking engagements in Las Vegas and on National Tour in the United States. The original West End production has played more than 3,500 performances, an international tour has played in more than 30 foreign cities, and the feature film of Mamma Mia!, produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, will be released in the summer of 2008.
Mamma Mia!'s Broadway company stars Tony Award nominated actress Carolee Carmello (Parade, Lestat, Urinetown) as "Donna Sheridan." Gina Ferrall (Beauty and the Beast, Big River) as "Rosie" and Judy McLane (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chess) as "Tanya" are her best friends and back-up band formerly known as "Donna and the Dynamos" who reunite on a Greek island for the wedding of Donna's daughter Sophie. Pearce Bunting (Mamma Mia! national tour) as "Bill Austin," Christopher Shyer (Canadian premieres of Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera) as "Sam Carmichael" and Ben Livingston (Broadway debut) as "Harry Bright" are the three men from Donna's past and Sophie's possible dads.
Bride-to-be "Sophie Sheridan" is played by Carey Anderson, who made her Broadway debut after starring in the national tour of Mamma Mia! Her fiancé "Sky" is played by Andy Kelso and Ben Gettinger plays his sidekick "Pepper," both men also make their Broadway bows. The cast also features Samantha Eggers as "Lisa" and Veronica J. Kuehn as "Ali," Sophie's best friends. Raymond J. Lee is "Eddie." The ensemble features Brent Black, Timothy Booth, Isaac Calpito, Allyson Carr, Meghan Dreyfuss, Lori Haley Fox, Frankie James Grande, Bryan Scott Johnson, Monica Kapoor, Corinne Melançon, Steve Morgan, Courtney Reed, Amina Robinson, Gerard Salvador and Leah Zepel.
"Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a tiny Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Songs including "Dancing Queen"; "The Winner Takes It All"; "Money, Money, Money" and "Take A Chance on Me" are all featured in this feel-good night of fun and laughter," explain press notes.
Mamma Mia! plays at the Winter Garden Theatre (1634 Broadway) Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m.
