SILFENT CURRENTS (March 21-April 6, 2014)
Be swept away by these dances about the relentless tides that define life's cyclical nature. Be closely drawn in to peer into the troubled soul of one protagonist trapped by her incurable obsession, then cast back to marvel at the shifting abstract patterns of an entire community rapt by the compelling rhythms of three very different masterful scores. Press Night: Fri., March 28
The concert features Risk of Repetition (premiered 2012), set to
Philip Glass', Violin Concerto, a work that is structured in the centuries-old, enduring form of the traditional three-movement concerto but is nonetheless unapologetic in its modernist expression that is at once inventive, theatrical and personal. One of Mateo's most gripping ballets to-date, Isle of the Dead (1992) is set to Russian composer Rachmaninov's score of the same name. Isle of the Dead is a compelling drama that eloquently speaks of the hope that prevails in the face of devastation. Circles (2010), set to
Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Piano and Strings, explores the unrestrained psycho-emotional stress of personal interdependency. Isolated and on the brink of insanity, a woman pleads for acknowledgement and dreams of independence from her passionate, abusive relationship.
Silent Currents opens at the stunning Sanctuary Theatre at 400 Harvard Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, March 21-April 6, 2014.Tickets are $40 for reserved cocktail table seating. For tickets, or more information, call (617) 354-7467 or www.BalletTheatre.org.
