This month, we feature the renowned The National Dance Company (Compania Nacional de Danza) headquartered in Madrid, Spain!
Founded in 1979 as the Spanish National Classical Ballet, the now-called The National Dance Company has achieved outstanding international prestige under the directors of the stature of Víctor Ullate, María de Ávila, Maya Plisetskaya and Nacho Duato. Jose Carlos Martinez is the current Artistic Director in place.
The National Dance Company, which tours Europe, has evolved towards a more contemporary style, although without sidelining its classical principles. It maintains its own distinctive identify, which is based on Spanish cultural and folkloric roots.
Throughout its history it has staged new choreographies by George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor and Ray Barra. It currently also has a choreography workshop and the National Dance Company 2, whose purpose is to prepare dancers for their life as professionals.
The company's 2012-2013 season presented a slew of premieres including SONATES by Jose Carlos Martinez, THREE PRELUDES by Ben Stevenson, DEMODE by Ivan Perez, WHO CARES by George Balanchine, BABYLON by Artantxa Sagardoy and Alfredo Bravo, and DESCAMINO DE DOS by Mattia Russo and Diego Tortelli.
Continuing the seaseon, The National Dance Company will next present the premiere of ROMEO AND JULIET with direction and choreography by Goyo Montero. ROMEO AND JULIET will run April 16 thru 27 at the Teatro Real.
