Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Presents Jewelry Collection

Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Ltd updated its web site with many recently acquired objects. Included among the recent acquisitions is a Roman Mable head of Jupiter, an Egyptian bronze statue of Anubis and a collection of ancient jewelry.

The ancient jewelry collection includes objects from a variety of ancient cultures including gold signet rings from Rome inlaid with semi-precious intaglio gems, a Greek golden laurel wreath diadem, as well as Egyptian and Byzantine pieces of jewelry.

The Roman signet rings are especially impressive. An intricately carved gem set within a gold ring was a mark of wealth and prestige in the Roman world. Each ring contains a carefully carved intaglio gemstone which was used as a seal in antiquity. Seals played an important role in ancient times as they were the primary means to secure and identify one's property. Given the delicate, detailed craftsmanship, all done without the aid of modern magnification, ancient gems were also revered and collected as works of art in antiquity.
