Helander Dance Theater presents Relation$#@*!, a quirky and whimsical exploration of relationships, at The Bakery Denver on February 21 and February 22, at 8 p.m.; and at the Broomfield Auditorium on February 28, at 7 p.m. With two performing artists and three musicians-who, for an hour, never leave the stage-this highly skilled and effective ensemble builds a dynamic and rich sound score that is a relationship in itself.

"Many of the ideas we work with are inspired by everyday experiences. We take these experiences and find in them the humor, the sadness, the absurdity, the challenges, and the opportunities to laugh at ourselves," said Danelle Helander, artistic director for Helander Dance Theater and a co-writer of Relation$#@*!

The production touches on relationships, from functionally dysfunctional friendships to the childhood memories that shape adult relationships. Additional content and character development have been added to this original work since it was first performed at The Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder in June 2013. "We received great feedback from these performances, which included questions like 'what was that?' and 'how'd you do that?'" said Helander. "The best feedback we got, however, was from those who said that they continued thinking about the piece for a couple of weeks after seeing the performance."

Relation$#@*! is designed for audiences to be entertained, to be provoked, to be moved, to laugh, and to experience that moment where you see yourself and connect. "It moves organically from one vignette to the next, while surprising you at every turn," said Helander. "You never know where we're going."
