Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre's When I Am King opened earlier this month to packed and enthusiastic crowds. In response, the company has extended the run to include a Friday, October 28th lunchtime matinee and a Friday, November 4th performance kicked off with a happy hour at Michael J's in Chinatown.
The performance explores what it means to be king-in a time when people struggle with notions of freedom, what does it mean to have control or power? By asking this question, the piece examines the dynamics at play in neighborhoods in transition, like Chinatown. The production also offers Angelenos access to a unique corner of Chinatown, and an opportunity to see it thoroughly.
When I am King marks the return of a creative team. Composer (and CalArts professor) Amy Knoles, and multi-disciplinary designer (and CalArts alum) Dan Evans join artistic forces with Duckler. Duckler previously collaborated with Knoles and Evans on her 2003 work, Sleeping With The Ambassador, at the Ambassador Hotel, another piece that offered Angelenos access to an otherwise dormant storied building. When I am King runs Saturdays, Oct. 22 & 29 at 8pm, Friday Oct. 28th at 12pm, Friday Nov. 4 at 7pm. Attendees must purchase a timed ticket for admission, group rates available.
