Gibney Dance presents EYE ON DANCE LIVE!, celebrating Bessie Schonberg and Louise Roberts, on Monday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Gibney Dance, 280 Broadway (entrance at 53A Chambers Street). Free admission!
"They (choreographers) need to take risks. You see, what is more important than facing failure...is to have courage." - Bessie Schonberg, on Eye on Dance, 1986
The evening will include the fascinating EYE ON DANCE episode that features two major and well-loved dance figures - Bessie Schonberg (dance mentor/composition teacher) and Louise Roberts (dance mentor, director of Clark Center) - taped in 1986.
Video excerpts of works by choreographers associated with Schonberg and Roberts will also be shown:
- Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's anarchy, wild women and Dinah
- Paul Andrew Thompson's Frantic Romanticism, and
- Valda Setterfield's introduction of Schonberg at the first Bessie Awards presentation in 1984.
At the live panel discussion that will follow the screenings, Celia Ipiotis (creator/producer/host of Eye on Dance) will explore the impact of Roberts' and Schonberg's dedication to encouraging a new generation of dancers, choreographers, and today's mentors with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (director of Urban Bush Women) Jill Williams (director of Clark Center Remembered), and Jessica Lang (mentored by Schonberg).
