Gallim Presents The World Premiere Of TO CREATE A WORLD At The Joyce Theater

Andrea Miller, Artistic Director of Gallim, returns to The Joyce Theater after a year as the choreographer-in-residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Building on her discoveries there, Miller's new work, To Create a World, harnesses the uncompromising virtuosity and raw vulnerability of the Gallim dancers in a provocative study of the human body and its instinct to survive. Performances are February 12-17, 2019 (Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm, Thursday-Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm). The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue (at 19th Street), in Manhattan.

Known for her striking, evocative work and "visceral, go-for-broke physicality" (New York Times), Andrea Miller has presented her work in theaters and alternative spaces, seeking out new ways of defining how performance is experienced and creating opportunities for conversations among genres. Miller's latest investigations are multifaceted, inspired by both the spaces and events that surround the process. These experiences-from her residency and performances at The Met, to site-specific projects at Grace Farms and The Glass House, to a film with Canadian director Xavier Dolan-have helped inform and shape her creative trajectory and are a critical jumping-off point as the company embarks upon its second decade.

At once textural and psychological, Miller's To Create a World is a multilayered exploration of the body's instinct to survive and the human urge to reinterpret and rationalize this instinct. With the body as the central force-both mover and moved-the evening-length work traces inner currents of pleasure and pain, regret and love, control and abandon, in a series of continually shifting sculptural portraits. To Create a World features an original score by composer/multi-instrumentalist Will Epstein, who collaborated with the company at The Met Breuer in spring 2018, and lighting design by Burke Brown. The work will be performed by Gallim dancers Allysen Hooks, David Maurice, Gary Reagan, Haley Sung, and Georgia Usborne.

About the Artists

Brooklyn-based company Gallim celebrates elemental connections through the exploration of the human experience. Under the direction of founder, artistic director and choreographer Andrea Miller, Gallim's international success spans the world of performing arts and cultural festivals, and includes collaborations in film, music, visual arts, and fashion. Over the past two years, Gallim has expanded the programming at its Clinton Hill studio to include residency space grants for young and emerging artists across disciplines, master classes and open company class, and free public talks featuring interviews with dance world luminaries and influencers that delve into life as an artist and other relevant topics. New this season is SETLIST, curated evenings of dance and music showcasing works by artist-in-residence choreographers, plus a set by a musician/composer.

Artistic director and choreographer Andrea Miller has established herself as a groundbreaking artist who brings unbridled vulnerability, physicality, and imagination to her work. Miller has been recognized with fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Sadler's Wells, and the Princess Grace Foundation. She was the 2017-2018 Artist-in-Residence at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, becoming the first choreographer to hold that distinction, and in October 2018 she was featured in Forbes as a female entrepreneur and leader in the dance world.

Miller creates movement-based works for dance, theater, museums, gallery spaces, film, fashion, events, and brands. Her highly acclaimed works and commissions are performed by Gallim as well as other leading dance companies around the world. Recent commissions include Abraham.in.Motion, Pennsylvania Ballet, Rambert 2, Netherlands Dance Theater 2, Bern Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and Noord Nederlands Dans. Her work in fashion/brands includes Hermès, Vogue, Lacoste, Calvin Klein, and KSwiss. Film credits include The Death and Life of John F. Donovan (2018), directed by Xavier Dolan, and In This Life (2018) starring Robbie Fairchild.

Miller has served as an adjunct professor at Barnard and has been invited to teach across the U.S., recently at Harvard University, the Juilliard School, New York University, Marymount College, Wesleyan University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Burke Brown's recent designs include projects with La Scala Ballet Theater, English National Ballet, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. His work has been presented at The Joyce Theater, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, New York City Center, Radio City Music Hall, and across North America, Europe, and Russia. Other dance projects include work with Bayerisches Staatsballett, Ballet West, Kansas City Ballet, Charlotte Ballet, TU Dance, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Parsons Dance, Houston Ballet, and Aszure Barton & Artists. Brown has also designed Off-Broadway, in regional theater, and for music artists of all types. Originally from North Carolina, Brown now lives in New York City. He received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama and is a member of Wingspace Theatrical Design.

Will Epstein is a composer, recording artist, and multi-instrumentalist born in New York City. He has performed internationally, released records of songs under his High Water moniker, and composed music for installations and films. In addition to creating music for Gallim's installation at The Met Breuer, he has collaborated on projects with such artists as Marilyn Minter and Laurie Simmons. He is a regular fixture in New York's improvised music scene and has released multiple albums with the label Other People.
