To kick off its 2011-2012 fall/winter season, The Joyce Theater is thrilled to present two one-week engagements by two of the world's leading flamenco artists from Spain, Israel Galván and Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenco. Israel Galván will open the season with a solo performance from September 20-25. From September 27 - October 2, Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenco, the company founded by Barrio in 1993 with her husband Artistic Director Martin Santangelo, will delight audiences with several pieces, including a New York premiere.
Tickets, sold separately for each company, are $10-$49 ($26-$37 for Joyce members) and can be arranged by calling JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800 or online at www.joyce.org. Please note: ticket prices are subject to change. The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street.
First up will be Israel Galván, a winner of Spain's prestigious National Dance Award, opening the Joyce fall season with La Edad de Oro, a sensational solo performance that shows why he has been called the William Forsythe of flamenco. Galván's lightening fast footwork is driven by the pulsating live music of guitarists Alfred Lagos and David Lagos, brothers from the Spanish town Jerez, flamenco's native land. Embodying a post-modern approach to flamenco, Galván strips the art down to its essence and gives it an inspired twist. The work, described as a passionate and exciting "face-off" between the stage and the audience with reactions ranging from surprises to laughter, had its world premiere in 2005 at the Albéniz theater in Madrid and its U.S. premiere during the Flamenco Festival, taking place in New York in January 2010. Israel Galván will be at The Joyce from September 20-25.Videos
