DanceWorks, Toronto's longest running contemporary dance series, proudly presents cutting-edge Vancouver dance company Shay Kuebler Radical System Art in its Toronto premiere with the startlingly athletic Glory. Choreographed by Artistic Director Shay Kuebler, it uses a mixture of martial arts, hip-hop and contemporary dance to explore the glorification of violence in our media-drenched culture. This multi-media work runs Friday April 28 and Saturday April 29 at 8pm nightly at Harbourfront Centre Theatre as part of the NextSteps series.
Inspired by the imagined epic battles of childhood, video games and a passion for action films, Kuebler, "one of Vancouver's most exciting choreographers known for an insanely cool hybrid of street and contemporary dance, martial arts, and other popular forms" (The Georgia Straight), examines the complexities of violence and violent behaviour.

Glory is a visually rich and dark physical essay with a cinematic scope that pushes audiences to question the commercialization and commodification of violence and violent material and its glorification and proliferation in today's world.

Six bold and dynamic performers - Maxine Chadburn, Hayden Fong, Shay Kuebler, Nick Lydiate, Tyler Layton Olson and Lexi Vajda - balance exacting and refined choreography with reckless energy in this visceral and impactful work that challenges as it provokes.

Glory premiered in 2015 at Vancouver's 2015 International Chutzpah! Festival. Watch the Glory Trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRfhQZAu8ek

Currently on a Canadian tour, the company performs Glory in Nelson, B.C. on April 7, Quebec City April 10-11, Oakville April 26, Toronto April 28-29 and returns to British Columbia for a Salt Spring Island date on May 3.

A word from the Artistic Director, Shay Kuebler:
I grew up competing in martial arts, an art form steeped and influenced by violence. From this training, there was heightened stress upon the needlessness of most violence and that one should only enact violence when pushed to the final point of survival. At this same point of development in the late 80s and 90s, I was living through one of the highest points of martial arts-inspired action movies. My passion for these violent films mixed with the respect of violence supported by my martial arts training creates a very interesting background to explore this topic.

Shay Kuebler Radical System Art was formed in Vancouver in February 2014 to support and develop the work of Artistic Director Shay Kuebler. The company aims to expand the art of physical performance through a versatile amorphous language of dance, martial arts, theatre, music and other forms, utilizing both film and stage as mediums to promote, disseminate and enhance performance art. The company builds upon the creations, productions and relationships that Kuebler created through years as an independent artist and collaborator in Canada. His work has crossed the boundaries of theatre, multiple forms of dance and physical performance including works for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, CitieBallet, L'École de danse de Québec and The Place School of Contemporary Dance in London. He is also one of the founding directors of The 605 Collective. His choreographic work has been commissioned for national and international festivals such as the Canada Dance Festival, Dancing on The Edge Festival, the International Dance Festival of Brazil and the Baalbek Arts Festival in Lebanon.https://shaykuebler.com
