Dance/NYC, New York City's leading organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge, appreciation, practice, and performance of dance in the metropolitan area, today announced its ninth annual 2018 Symposium happening Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Gibney Dance's downtown location. This is the only full-day gathering of dance leaders, makers, and supporters in the metropolitan New York City area. Hundreds will gather for panel discussions, case studies, interactive workshops, individual legal and management consultations, a networking lunch, and more. (Visit Dance.NYC for complete program.)
This year's Symposium will consider the role of New York dance artists and creativity in a changing United States, as the dance field responds to the priorities of a new presidential administration. It will invite participants to deep dive into the topics of growing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workforce; increasing dance education; advancing individual artists; and harnessing technology, among others, in the context of a changing national climate and following the release of CreateNYC, the City of New York's first-ever cultural plan. "In this moment of political transition, Dance/NYC reaffirms its core values of equity and inclusion and its mission to promote and encourage the knowledge, appreciation, practice, and performance of dance in the New York City metropolitan area," says Lane Harwell, Executive Director of Dance/NYC. "Dance/NYC is committed to providing open forums to reveal and address the needs and opportunities of the field and the people of the metropolitan area."
Dance/NYC has announced primary content, including discussions on the role of the artist as an advocate/activist, with United States Artists President & CEO Deana Haggag, and New York Live Arts Artistic Director Bill T. Jones; on the role of government in supporting the arts, with Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch, and Alternate Roots Executive Director Michelle Ramos; on the funding of dance, with Grantmakers in the Arts President and CEO Eddie Torres; and on race and dance, with writer, curator, and educator Eva Yaa Asantewaa.
