Dance Theatre in Westchester, Nai-Ni Chen Dance, Moscow City Ballet and More Set for Brooklyn Center's 2014-15 World Dance Series

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College has announced its 2014-15 60th Anniversary World Dance series.

Since the inception of the dance series in 1966, more than 175 regional, national and international companies have premiered new works as a part of this series. This year's lineup includes Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana's The Soul of Flamenco, Nai-Ni Chin Dance Company performing a Lunar New Year Celebration, the Moscow City Ballet's production of Don Quixote, and the return of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC). These companies reflect the artistic excellence and cultural diversity to which Brooklyn Center is dedicated.

Tickets to Brooklyn Center's World Dance series range from $30-$75 and can be purchased at BrooklynCenter.org or by calling the box office at 718-951-4500 (Tues-Sat, 1pm-6pm).

Brooklyn Center will also present two dance performances for children: a free lecture/demonstration entitled The Beauty of Ballet, presented in partnership with The School of American Ballet, and its annual presentation of Dance Theatre in Westchester's family-friendly The Colonial Nutcracker.

Known the world over for its "infectiously joyful celebration of music and dance" (The New York Times), this premier ensemble celebrates its 30th anniversary with a passionate new show that embodies the purity of traditional flamenco and classical Spanish dance, including Ángel Muñoz's impressive new piece, "A Solas".

The Colonial Nutcracker

Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 2pm

Tickets: $15

An annual holiday favorite, Dance Theatre in Westchester performs its family-friendly, full-length version of Tchaikovsky's ballet set in wintry colonial Yorktown, complete with a red-coated mouse army, an enchanted nutcracker prince, and simultaneous narration to help young audience members enjoy this timeless classic.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 3pm

Tickets: $25/$12.50 (children 12 and under)

Usher in the Year of the Sheep, a year characterized by peace, love, and woolly gentleness, with a family-friendly performance by the world-renowned Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. This lively celebration of Chinese culture includes colorfully-clad dancers, ancient melodies played on traditional instruments, and awe-inspiring acrobats and lion dancers.

Tickets: FREE event, no tickets issued; recommended for ages four and up

Join students and faculty of the world-famous School of American Ballet (the official academy of New York City Ballet) in this program illustrating the process by which talented youngsters develop into accomplished classical ballet dancers. Your children will watch a "class" where training exercises and steps are demonstrated, and also enjoy excerpts from famous ballets.

Don Quixote

Based on an episode from Cervantes' famous novel, Petipa's whimsical and romantic Don Quixote follows its title hero as he travels to Barcelona in pursuit of honor and the lovely Dulcinea. Founded in 1988 by distinguished Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, the Moscow City Ballet is one of Russia's most extensively touring ballet companies, appearing not only throughout Russia but in Europe, the Far East, Egypt, Israel, and North and South America.

One of the premier dance companies in the Caribbean, NDTC blends the folklore, music and dance of Jamaica, Africa and the American South with modern and classical forms to create a vibrant celebration of West Indian culture. Their much-anticipated return to Brooklyn Center will feature two programs combining evocative new works with favorites from their extensive repertoire.
