Dance Pizazz, the St. Louis area's funnest, friendliest dance studio (http://www.dance-pizazz.com), wants to share part three of its six part series on Dance Etiquette; Asking For a Dance. Social dances can be intimidating for even the most outgoing of people. Dancing isn't just about good conversation; it's about being able to move to music with another person for enjoyment. That is why Dance Pizazz is offering the following advice for asking for a dance.
Who to ask is always the first question on anyone's mind. This can be answered in a few sentences. Everyone is at a social dance to dance with everyone. A good dancer makes their partner look like a good dancer. Therefore dancing with people both great and not so great is going to make you look like and ultimately into a better dancer. Don't be modest, just pick out someone and have the courage to ask them to dance.
Asking for a dance is the easy part. It's often best to stick with traditional phrases:
Eye contact is another very important part of asking someone to dance. Direct eye contact from a distance of about 3 to 4 feet away is best. If the music is loud, offering your hand along with eye contact is often required. It's also just as common these days for women to ask men to dance.
Being declined a dance is very rare, and in proper etiquette is frowned upon; However it does happen. It's often in the case of someone not knowing that particular genre of dance, or taking a break. In all of these instances, it's fine to offer a dance later also known as a rain check.
At Dance Pizazz we understand how important it is for students to have a proper dance experience. That is why we practice proper dance etiquette at all times. Check out http://www.dance-pizazz.com to learn more about dance etiquette and its importance to your dance experience.
