Dance New Amsterdam (DNA), NYC's most progressive dance education center, creative laboratory and performance space, announced today that individual giving to the organization has seen an increase of nearly 80 percent. Recent donations include $13,000 from the Dorsay Foundation, a private family foundation based in Michigan and founded in 2007. Numerous donations of $5,000 including gifts from Deutsche Bank and other employee corporate matches add to the milestone. Since fiscal year 2009, DNA has also deeply increased corporate sponsorship with grants from American Express in support of DNA's superlative international and contemporary heritage programming, along with educational programming support through Capezio Corporation and Red Bull. Additionally, grants from foreign government embassies and consulates including Japan, Israel, France, Switzerland, Poland and the Netherlands have increased 100% since fiscal year 2009 and continue to grow.

"We truly believe DNA has made a positive impact on the dance community with a reach that extends beyond that of New York City," said Dorsay Foundation's Board of Directors. "We hope our donation will help the organization continue to thrive and contribute to the safe training and professional development of dancers and dance enthusiasts."

Also underlining the value of the organization, DNA is one of only 250 organizations invited by Bloomberg Philanthropies to submit a proposal today for funding under the Bloomberg Arts Advancement Initiative. If awarded, the unrestricted support will further the organization's distinctive artistic vision. The foundation expects tangible capacity building and stabilization milestones to be reached during the two-year grant.

"Bloomberg Philanthropies' invitation classifies DNA as one of the few national organizations under consideration for support through unrestricted funding. This grant not only signifies the importance of DNA's mission to provide dance resources to the arts community, it also honors American dance," said Catherine Peila, Executive/Artistic Director of DNA. "Grants, sponsorships and DNA's essential individual giving campaigns have an unparalleled effect on the educational and artist opportunities our organization offers to more than 9,000 emerging and professional dancers, commissioned artists, and our expanding global community."

In 2009, amidst economic turmoil, DNA instituted its first major individual giving program, and has received astounding support from the community. The organization will launch its semi-annual Spring individual giving campaign this month to raise essential funds for general operating expenses, artist subsidies and its four core artist residency programs, as well as faculty and student dance education, creation and performances. Additional donor initiatives underway include "Adopt-A-Studio," "IAPS" (Individual Artist Production Sponsorships), and the opportunity to name the 130-seat theater and the second floor gallery.

The efforts made by DNA's Executive/Artistic Director Catherine Peila, staff and Board of Directors to increase the organization's visibility have resulted in new partnerships in NYC as well as abroad. Through resource sharing and cross-promotions, these associations increase DNA's efficiency; the organization reaches a broader audience while strengthening its programs. Additionally, the organization is working closely alongside cross-sector business and financial experts to continue to refine an innovative mission-based nonprofit business model. The uniquely integrated model supports each artist's creative journey, thus ensuring the perpetuity of dance and American culture across the globe.
