Dance New Amsterdam (DNA), NYC's foremost progressive dance education and performance center, explores theatricality in its third installment of DNA PRESENTS LateNite. Giving voice to artists working within the mediums of dance, performance art and experimental theater, the evening will feature Bradley TeAl Ellis, Jaamil Kosoko, Victoria Libertore, Sarah A.O. Rosner and Saul Ulerio. The fantastic evening will take place February 4, 2011 at 9:30 p.m. in DNA's state-of-the-art 130-seat theater.
"LateNite is an opportunity for dance inspired artists to offer us a night of experimental challenging work. Our artists are incorporating interdisciplinary and performance art; a realm that offers them more room for exposing their deep self, through performance," says Catherine Peila, Executive and Artistic Director. "LateNite is inviting artists to experiment with theater, dance and a variety of inspirational sources to create work that spans genres. I'm always excited to see LateNite artists – it often surprises me and in a good way."
Opening the evening, Bradley TeAl Ellis who hails from North Carolina, will bring a sexual-political improvisational work to the stage that evokes ten minutes of conscious and self-conscious reflection. The untitled work is the second section of a developing piece that will be presented during DNA's 2012-2013 Season.
Jaamil Kosoko, a 2012 Philadelphia Live Arts Brewery Fellow, plays Jeremiah, a character presenting a performance lecture in his new work The Invisibility Complex. The duet examines theories of black existentialism through stand up comedy, contemporary dance, characterization and soul music.
Victoria Libertore, who hosted DNA's 2011-2012 Season's second installment of LateNite, sheds her cabaret persona and returns to DNA's stage to present a solo version of a new work that is in development as a full evening play. The original work will combine theatre, dance and improvisation with her signature style of humor, sensuality and a touch of the inappropriate to explore the underbelly of humanity.
DNA will become the first major dance-presenting venue to feature Sarah A.O. Rosner and the A.O. Movement Collective's pioneering work barrish, which is an experiment of 32 transmutable pieces that make up the MENU project. barrish, curation #5: LateNite, combines five specific sections (invocation, skinless, victim phrase, SVU play and Get The Fuck Out) of the 32 developed sections that investigate female "victimness", both as a pop-culture phenomenon and a body-based state of being.
The evening will also feature a new work by Saul Ulerio + The Human Institution. Ulerio is expanding and morphing inspirations from his most recent piece presented through the Fresh Tracks showcase at New York Live Arts.
