This week, lucky students from Swindon Dance's Youth Dance Academy (YDA) will have the opportunity to work with renowned dancer and choreographer Aakash Odedra and Hip Hop specialist Brooke Milliner, from World Championship winning dance group Plague.
Aakash (who is performing his piece 'Rising' this Friday 31st October in Swindon Dance's 100-seat theatre - tickets available from www.swindondance.org.uk) will be conducting choreographic sessions with advanced students on the YDA Contemporary Programme at Swindon Dance. Brooke Milliner will be leading daily class with students on the YDA Urban Programme. These residencies are part of the YDA's Half Term Intensive week, which is a chance for students to be inspired, encouraged and trained by working professional dancers - a key part of their dance training at the non-profit organisation.
Lucy Coogan, YDA Administrator, states that "Sometimes even the young people can't grasp how precious and rare these opportunities are. Working alongside current professionals in the dance sector not only keeps the trainee dancers artistically and creatively fresh, it also provides them with expert training, as they are learning from the best. More importantly, it builds aspiration in a way that nothing else can - they start to realise that there is a world outside their home town and family, one which is available to them if they are prepared to work hard".
