This year's Dance Congress (June 6-9, 2013), the third in an acclaimed series, promises to surpass the massive success of the first two: Berlin (2006) and Hamburg (2009). The German Cultural Foundation, the event's main sponsor, considers it among its top events.

Under the theme "Bewegungen übersetzen - Performing Translations," there will be more than 100 events in different formats, including performances, lectures, workshops and lecture demonstrations. The event will explore translation and understanding of body concepts and movement, as well as cross-cultural working methods. How are practices, value judgments and patterns of behavior "translated" from other contexts? What role can bodies and movements play?

Dance performances - developed by or through invitation from Düsseldorf dance institutions - supplement the meeting program through physical movement and body language.

Topics will include discussions and performances on the status of dance and choreography in Europe, Africa, India, South America and South Pacific, e.g. the fusion of contemporary dance, yoga, and urban activism in New Delhi. Another topic will be body image in dance, a critical look at the representation of certain body images, e.g., underrepresented disabled or "differently-abled" bodies and advanced age.

Dance Congress 2013 is sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, and developed by Sabine Gehm and Katharina von Wilcke in cooperation with artists and other experts in the international dance scene, as well as in collaboration with tanzhaus nrw (Dance House North Rhine Westphalia) and Capitol Theater Düsseldorf, Deutsche Oper am Rhein (City Opera House) Düsseldorf Duisburg, Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, FFT Düsseldorf and the International Research Center's "Interweaving Performance Cultures" of Freie Universität Berlin.
