Diavolo - Architecture in Motion, returns to Houston tonight, Jan. 9, 2015, at 8 p.m., in Jones Hall, presented by Society for the Performing Arts.

Diavolo's dancers, gymnasts, athletes and actors brilliantly explore the space where reality ends and imagination begins. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jacques Heim, who has choreographed works for Cirque du Soleil, the company reinvents dance, reimagines theatre and redefines thrills. The company uses abstract and recognizable structures to explore the relationship between the danger of our environment and the fragility of the human body.

For its return to Houston, Diavolo will perform the final work of its L'Espace du Temps (Space of Time) trilogy created specifically for the Hollywood Bowl, titled Fluid Infinities. Choreographed to Philip Glass' Symphony No. 3, Fluid Infinities is set on an abstract dome structure on which performers explore metaphors of infinite space, continuous movement and humanity's voyage into the unknown future. The dome's organic pattern -- which evokes the craters of the moon, a honeycomb of bees, a shifting brain or an undiscovered starship -- transports Diavolo's performers and audiences into a space that is otherworldly. The trilogy premiered in 2007, with the hyper-physical troupe dancing to Foreign Bodies, a work composed by Esa-Pekka Salonen, followed by Fearful Symmetries in 2010 set to music by John Adams.

Also on the program is Trajectoire, a visceral and emotional journey through the ebb and flow of the human experience featuring a large, rocking boat like structure on stage. As the performers struggle to find their balance on a voyage of destiny and destination, this piece shows the transcendence of the human soul.

Founded in 1992 in Los Angeles by Heim, Diavolo - Architecture in Motion is a fusion of different movement vocabularies including everyday movement, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, marital arts and hip-hop. In 2004, Heim joined forces with Cirque du Soleil and choreographed KA for Las Vegas' MGM Grand. In 2006, Jacques created choreography for The Stones, a theatre piece produced by Center Theatre Group at the Douglas Theater.
