Performer and choreographer Domineka Reeves presents Together We Stand, a forty-five-minute piece of dance and videography scenes that explores different concepts of emotions evoked from our past and present society issues.
Together We Stand, was created to explore the complex concepts of self-realization, fear, and empowerment. This dance distinctively presents the cohesiveness of these three commonly experienced phases in life, through videography, original musical compositions, and movement. This dance uses distinct sounds within each musical composition to create an environment filled with tranquility, uneasiness, and empowerment.
Different personal experiences and social issues from everyday life is what she uses to authenticate the reoccurring and expressionistic style of movement within this dance. By using some of these experiences, as well as historical information for inspiration, she has created movement that conveys elements such as, honesty, perseverance, and rebellion. There is a powerful quote by Alvin Ailey which drives her to continue an in-depth exploration of her internal self through movement. He states that "Dance is for everybody. And I believe that dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people".
Earning her Associates Degree in Fine Arts, Domineka Reeves has been studying Dance Education and Choreography at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, to earn her Bachelors. She was born in Washington D.C. and moved to Baltimore MD. Shortly after. She is thrilled to be a Baltimore Independent Dance Artist, and will continue to display her unique perspective through dance all throughout Baltimore.
The performance takes place on April 22, 2017, at Baltimore Theatre Project, 45 W. Preston St. Baltimore, MD 21201. This is a fully furnished studio with beverages offered before and after the show.
