Chen Dance Center Presents NEWSTEPS ImageChen Dance Center presents Newsteps, its semi-annual emerging choreographers series, April 19-21 at 7:30 PM at the Chen Dance Center in New York's Chinatown. This edition of newsteps differs from past events in that the participants selected to show their works are "non dancers" - professional artists, actors, musicians, singers, photographers, applying their knowledge of the creative processes of their respective art forms to the choreographic process.

This includes, but is not limited to, choreographing, performing moves and feelings, and each creating in an original, multi-media style.

The five choreographers selected for the April concerts are Kate Douglas, Bryndon Cook, Lauren Oliver, Alec Funiciello, and Sophia Zukoski, all chosen through an open audition at the Chen Dance Center.

Kate Douglas will present a study on nature versus nurture; Bryndon Cook performs a solo about the dangers of insomnia through music made in the middle of the night; Lauren Oliver will be exploring movement associated with feminity; Alec Funiciello presents 'How To Fall In Love With The Earth Again," a movement meditation on the practice of listening; Sophia Zukoski's work deals with the habitual natures of isolationism and addiction.

Transportation to the Chen Dance Center: take the #6, N, R, Q, J, or Z train to Canal Street. Walk east towards Chinatown; turn right on Mulberry and walk one block south to Bayard.

CHEN DANCE CENTER is composed of three components: a performing arts school serving hundreds of youngsters in the community; a black box theater for dance; and home of its resident dance company H.T. Chen & Dancers. Chen Dance Center is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and CreateNYC.
