Camille A. Brown & Dancers, recognized for its introspective approach to cultural themes through visceral movement and socio-political dialogues, announces its 2015-2016 Season tour. Commencing with the world premiere of Bessie and Doris Duke award-winning choreographer Camille A. Brown's BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play at New York's Joyce Theater, the company will also tour to 10 venues and cities across the nation, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami. Performances will feature original live music by composers Scott Patterson (piano) and Tracy Wormworth (electric bass), and a moderated dialogue with audiences around the cultural and universal themes presented by the Company's repertory. Mark Anthony Neal and dream hampton are among the moderators for the Joyce Theater. The season will also include various residencies, Black Girl Spectrum workshops and panel discussions.
BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play reveals the spectrum of identities black females in urban American culture. The performers evolve in their identities from childhood innocence, to girlhood awareness, to maturity-all the while shaped by their environments, the bonds of sisterhood, and society at large. This work is heavily inspired by Brown's own experiences and influenced by: Shapeshifters: Black Girls and the Choreography of Citizenship by Dr. Aimee Meredith Cox and The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes from Double-dutch to Hip-hop by Dr. Kyra Gaunt.
In addition to Brown's newest work, the Company will also present audience favorite New Second Line while on tour. The work, inspired by the events of Hurricane Katrina, aptly celebrates the spirit and culture of New Orleans.
"Brown is a masterful storyteller, seeking to reveal the profound in her known experience, a black woman in contemporary America. She is an anthropologist of social dances," said Talvin Wilks, a director, playwright and dramaturg who worked with Brown on BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play. "These cultural vernaculars live through her work, she imbues them with new and pressing meaning."
Camille A. Brown & Dancers is made up of nine dancers including Camille A. Brown, Beatrice Capote, Timothy Edwards, Catherine Foster, Fana Fraser, Juel D. Lane, Mora-Amina Parker, Willie "Tre" Smith III and Yusha-Marie Sorzano. The Company's Black Girl
Spectrum initiative is rooted in the transformative power of dance-creating a safe space for black girls to live as creative citizens, where black girl brilliance is nurtured and valued or stands to be enhanced. The Black Girl Spectrum team includes the company along with Francine E. Ott, Mayte Natalio, and Cultural Organizer, Ebony Golden
