Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts to Present Buenos Aires Tango

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College opens its 2016-17 season on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 8pm with Argentine Tango company Estampas Porteñas and their newest production, Deseos: Stories of Longing and Desire, a celebration of the greatest artistic elements of Argentina including the indomitable tango, the athletic malambo of the gauchos, and the country's wide range of musical styles. Under the artistic direction of company founder Carolina Solas, this internationally acclaimed ensemble of 25 dancers and musicians kicks off Brooklyn Center's 2016-17 World of Dance series. Estampas Porteñas was founded in Buenos Aires in 1997 by the distinguished dancer and choreographer Carolina Soler. In its first year, the company toured China, performing over 60 successful engagements. On its return to Argentina, they performed at the Cultural Centre General San Martin and enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, being described by local press as "...dazzling the audience with talent, seduction and beauty." To date, the company has performed in over 20 countries on five continents with a number of different productions including "Tango Fire," "Tango Feeling," and "Entre Tangos y Firuletes."

At the age of six, Carolina Soler commenced her studies in classical dance at the Lima Municipal Ballet, Peru. In 1972, she entered the Choreartium Association Ballet where she performed as a soloist in Swan Lake, Raymonda, Coppelia, and Interplay, and as a principal ballerina in Suite en Blanc, Paquita, Hansel & Gretel, Nocturnal and Giselle, before completing her studies with masters such as Alexander Plissetky, Annel Vourenjuvry, Victori Roma, and Yele Krnic. Awarded a scholarship in Buenos Aires, she studied with Olga Ferri, Gloria Kasda, Rodolfo Fontán, and Esther Knavaia and undertook a partnering course with Ricardo Novich. In 1978, she joined the resident ballet of the Teatro Colon where she had the opportunity to perform all the major works of the classical repertoire, winning plaudits as a prima ballerina.

Her interest in Tango began when she performed Tango Dance with Raul Garello, resulting in the 1996 formation of Estampas Porteñas. Carolina has undertaken the role of choreographer, principal dancer and artistic director of the Company. Carolina has led Estampas Porteñas on tours to many countries including Taiwan, China, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. For her wide-ranging artistic endeavors, Carolina has been honored with the prestigious Adán Buenosayres Award.

Buenos Aires Tango is part of Brooklyn Center's 2016-17 World of Dance Series, which also includes Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company's Lunar New Year Celebration (January 22, 2017 at 3pm), the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (March 18, 2017 at 8pm and March 19, 2017 at 3pm), and Step Afrika! (April 1, 2017 at 8pm).
