BreAking invites audiences to break away from fixed systems and limitations, and to be the owner of their own rhythm and individuality.
In a performance that renews contemporary dance, reinvents street dance and sets it to gugak - traditional Korean music - the new show from Lee Kyungeun (Lee K-Dance, Mind Goblin 2017) brings together eight dancers to imagine, play and reconstruct the world onstage. BreAking invites audiences to break away from fixed systems and limitations, and to be the owner of their own rhythm and individuality. With five contemporary and three street dancers, the show is set to music by Lee Ilwoo, a member of Korean avant-rock band Jambinai, who combines traditional Korean folk instruments with rock music instrumentation, and performed at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games closing ceremony.
The performances will take place Aug 5-7, 9-14.
Lee Kyungeun said, "Hopefully the burden that you, who are the protagonist of life, have today will be lifted tomorrow! You will be able to break and push in your own way".
Lee Kyungeun previously came to Edinburgh with Mind Goblin, which was awarded Performer Prize from the Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers in 2016, and won Best New Dancer from the Contemporary Dance Association of Korea for the debut Wavering Heart in 1996. Lee was acknowledged nationally and internationally for talents as a choreographer when awarded the Gold Prize at the 4th Korean Choreographer Festival and received first place at the 8th International Solo Tanz Theatre Festival in Germany. Lee was also awarded Best Choreographer at the 2003 Dance Festival for the Critics' Choice of Young Artists. She received 2nd Grand Atelier Choregraphes-Compositeurs at the Royaumont Foundation. Lee has performed at SIDance, MODAFE, SPAF, the Tokyo Dance Biennale (Japan), the APAP/Dumbo Festival (US), Fondation Royaumont (France), Sziget Festival (Hungary), Kaay Fecc/Makinu Bantu (Africa) and in Germany.
