Sensuous Brazilian dance troupe, Grupo Corpo, returns to Park City's Eccles Center on Saturday, March 19. The riveting multicultural blend of ballet and modern movement begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 435-655-3114 or online at EcclesCenter.org.
Founded in 1975, Grupo Corpo has never been a stagnant company. Pushing boundaries and exploring new movement and music, its rippling and rhythmic style dazzles audiences and critics alike. The New York Times calls the troupe "spectacular" and The Globe and Mail declares the troupe "arguably the best on the planet."
Grupo Corpo's return to Park City features two pieces: "Suíte Branca" (translation "White Suite," which marks the first collaboration between the young choreographer from São Paulo, Cassi Abranches, and the dance company from Minas Gerais. Among undulating arms and hips, pendular movements, suspensions, and considerable floor work, the score suggests an interaction with the law of gravity, where it is possible to see the distinctive traits of Grupo Corpo that for so long have inhabited our imagination; and, at the same time, to glimpse the strength of an unequivocal otherness. "Dança Sinfônica" or "Symphonic Dance," which was created to celebrate the troupe's 40th anniversary, reveals the trajectory of the company and its many influences over four decades.
Despite the company's exploration of a remarkable range of geographic influences and frontiers of contemporary dance, it retains a commitment to the corps ideal. After all, as their name indicates, this is a group of bodies - phenomenal, strong, and graceful dancers. As The Canadian Press puts is, "While there is individual style, the dancers are all so fluid, so virtuosic and adept, that for a first-time viewer, they all stand out as stellar."
Park City Institute presents Grupo Corpo on March 19, 2016 at The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center for the Performing Arts (1750 Kearns Blvd., Park City). Tickets range from $25-$75 (20-percent discount for seniors, ½ price tickets for children ages 16 and under; $5 seats are available in the Copper Section for Summit County students (K-12).
