Following BalletBoyz recent sellout and critically acclaimed UK tour of the Talent 2013, the company is to celebrate the opening of the new BalletBoyz studio and homebase in Kingston with a special gala performance at the Rose Theatre on Saturday June 22nd. Following a major refurbishment, the company's new studio base is on Canbury Park Road and features two fully equipped dance studios, rehearsal and office space and film editing facilities.
The Rose Theatre show promises to be chockfull of entertainment and surprises; celebrating the twelve years since BalletBoyz were co-founded by Artistic Directors Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, the star studded evening will features excerpts of works commissioned by them over the years from choreographers including Russell Maliphant, Christopher Wheeldon, Liv Lorent, Paul Roberts, Jarek Cemerek, and Liam Scarlett. The BalletBoyz own all-male company, the Talent, will perform some audience favourites and joining the company onstage will be singer/songwriter, Keaton Henson, whose music was used in the 2010 piece Alpha.
The major coup of the evening is a return to the stage of Nunn and Trevitt themselves! They will perform an extract from the first ever piece they danced as BalletBoyz in 2001 - Critical Mass by Russell Maliphant. It marks the first time these celebrated ex-dancers have performed publicly since 2009.
"We haven't performed at the Rose Theatre before," says Michael Nunn, "and we're very much looking forward to it. The Rose is an unusual venue with a big stage and great space and we're creating a show specifically for the theatre. During the evening we'll be showing some of our film clips which will tell the story of BalletBoyz and take the audience behind the scenes. It's certainly going to be an evening to remember!"
"The show is the perfect way for us to mark our arrival in Kingston," adds William Trevitt. "We had originally planned to stage the show last November but we were still in the process of working on building the new studio so we're delighted to have been able to re-schedule this very special evening for June 22nd. We're planning an exciting programme with lots of variety and, we hope, a celebratory tone. The Company has achieved much over the last twelve years and we look forward to the next twelve, as proud residents of Kingston-Upon-Thames."
The BalletBoyz studios will be very busy over the summer; in August the company will be running the BalletBoyz Boot Camp for boys and girls aged 13-17; a week long workshop for young dancers. Two summer intensives - one in ballet and one in contemporary style - will also be available to professional and pre-professional dancers aged 18+. In September the company will launch a series of daytime and evening dance classes, including pre-school movement, kids' ballet and dance, adults' ballet as well as yoga and Pilates.
Join BalletBoyz for an entertaining, one-off gala evening of dance and music at the Rose Theatre, Kingston-Upon-Thames on Saturday June 22nd at 7.30pm. Tickets: £8 to £25. Online: www.rosetheatrekingston.org.
