Ballet, Flamenco, and More Lead The Joyce Theater Foundation's 2016 Spring/Summer Season

The Joyce Theater Foundation, Linda Shelton Executive Director, announced today the roster of its 2016 Spring and Summer Season, offering audiences the opportunity to experience talent from around the world both in its iconic Chelsea home, and in other New York City venues, large and small.

With companies hailing from four continents, a wide variety of dance styles await you at The Joyce Theater this spring and summer. This season is a ballet lover's dream-over ten companies rooted in the ballet tradition will grace the stage to perform pieces ranging from the classical work of Sarasota Ballet to the contemporary worlds of Jessica Lang Dance, BalletX, L.A. Dance Project, Ballet BC and Pennsylvania Ballet. In contrast to this balletic bunch, the fiery Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe makes its New York debut and 2015 MacArthur 'Genius Grant' winner Michelle Dorrance is on tap, too. Literally!

The season also celebrates The Joyce's ongoing dedication to promoting the best of international dance, witnessed in a festival devoted to Cuban artists as well as appearances by Hong Kong Ballet, Ballet Preljocaj, and São Paulo Dance Company, from Brazil.

One of the largest ballet companies in the United States, Miami City Ballet boasts an impressive repertoire of nearly 50 Balanchine ballets and numerous world premieres by an esteemed roster of 21st century choreographers. For this spectacular appearance taking place on the Koch Theater stage, the company performs Balanchine's Bourrée Fantasque, Symphony in Three Movements, and Serenade, along with the New York premieres of commissioned contemporary works by Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky and Liam Scarlett. World renowned dancers Alessandra Ferri and Herman Cornejo join forces with the adventurous acclaimed pianist Bruce Levingston to create TRIO ConcertDance, a program of commissioned work by three enchanting contemporary choreographers-Russell Maliphant, resident artist of Sadler's Wells; Demis Volpi, resident choreographer of Stuttgart Ballet; and Fang-Yi Sheu, from Taiwan. This magnificent engagement also features Ferri and Cornejo performing work by Angelin Preljocaj. Clifton Taylor joins the artistic team as the lighting designer.

Stephen Petronio Company returns to The Joyce with the highly anticipated second offering of Bloodlines, Petronio's project to embrace significant works by the masters who have inspired him. Following last spring's performance of Cunningham's RainForest (1968), Petronio presents Trisha Brown's landmark Glacial Decoy (1979), her first dance for the proscenium stage, featuring Robert Rauschenberg's iconic visual design and costumes. Petronio plays Brown's cool, all-female meditation against the heat and volatility of his signature anthem to gender and power, MiddleSexGorge(1990). Rounding out the program is the world premiere of Petronio's "talking dance," Big Daddy Deluxe, based on his solo Big Daddy(2014), and expanded here to include his company of formidable dancers.

One of Asia's premier classical ballet companies, Hong Kong Ballet is gaining international recognition as a world-class institution that represents Hong Kong's unique character. The first company in Asia to perform Nacho Duato's eloquent Castrati, Hong Kong Ballet brings this ballet to the Joyce stage along with work by Krzysztof Pastor, the Artistic Director of Polish National Ballet, and Fei Bo, Resident Choreographer of the National Ballet of China. For its New York debut, the impassioned Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe brings a rich visual pageant to the Joyce stage, bearing strong traces of the company's Southwestern home base in New Mexico, with a direct cultural lineage to the flamenco enclaves of Europe. Lead dancer and Artistic Director Juan Siddi infuses his choreography with the flavor of his artistic roots in Barcelona and Granada, polishing the traditional with contemporary flair. This fiery ensemble of fourteen dancers and musicians-many hailing from Spain-delivers a bold theatrical experience for aficionados and flamenco newcomers alike.

Since its founding in 1963, Pennsylvania Ballet has earned a reputation as one of the leading ballet companies in the United States, and the appointment of former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Angel Corella as Artistic Director has ushered in a new, exciting era. For its Joyce season, the company presents three works choreographed specifically for its dancers-Choreographer-in-Residence Matthew Neenan's Keep; Trey McIntyre's The Accidental; and Nicolo Fonte's Grace Action.

Celebrating 45 years of repertory that reflects the ever-changing diversity of Latino cultures, Ballet Hispanico is the new expression of American contemporary dance. Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro debuts two programs including the Joyce premiere of an evening-length work by the highly theatrical choreographer Fernando Melo, set to a rich medley of Brazilian music, and a second program featuring a double bill of Spanish favorites: the New York premiere of Gustavo Ramírez Sansano's colorful, amusing, and fast-moving Flabbergast and a revival of Ramón Oller's beloved and haunting Bury Me Standing.

American Ballet Theatre Studio Company

American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company, formerly ABT II, is known for its technically skillful interpretations of repertoire by acclaimed and emerging choreographers. This elite classical troupe made up of 12-14 dancers prepares young artists ages 16-20 to enter American Ballet Theatre's main company as well as other leading national and international professional ballet companies. ABT Studio Company's return to The Joyce will feature several New York premieres and a blend of classical and contemporary works showcasing the dynamic talent of these young dancers.

Since founding his company in 1985, Angelin Preljocaj has received international acclaim not only for the works that he has created for Ballet Preljocaj but also for those that he has set on major international companies like La Scala, New York City Ballet, and Paris Opera Ballet. This season, the company comes to The Joyce with Empty moves (parts I, II &III), a piece combining three movement studies created over the course of ten years. Based on John Cage's Empty Words, an intriguing book designed to turn language into music, Empty moves deconstructs movement and demonstrates a new expression of choreographic phrasing. The result is one of the choreographer's "most sophisticated and meditative dances of all." The New York Times. Support for The Joyce's presentation of international dance provided by the R. Virtuosic tap dance meets interactive electronic music technology in ETM: Double Down, a world premiere from Dorrance Dance. Innovative choreographers Michelle Dorrance (a 2015 MacArthur Genius Fellow) and Nicholas Van Young perform with multi-form dancer Ephrat "Bounce" Asherie, vocalist Aaron Marcellus, bassist/composer Greg Richardson, and the dynamic artists of Dorrance Dance, creating an imaginative world of sound, movement, and the forces that join them. Featuring breathtaking solos, duets, and ensemble choreography, ETM: Double Down incorporates Young's award-winning electronic tap instruments. Recognized as one of the major dance companies of Latin America, São Paulo Dance Company(SPCD) makes its Joyce debut with works showcasing the incredible dynamics, versatility, and passion of Brazilian dancers. The program includes Céu Cinzento, Clébio Oliveira's 2015 work examining impossible love; Gen, Cassi Abranches's 2014 work highlighting the transition from dancer to choreographer; Mamihlapinatapai, Jomar Mesquita's 2012 work exploring a look shared by two people; and Gnawa, Nacho Duato's 2005 work using the four basic elements to address the relationship between humans and the universe. Cuba Festival

The Joyce continues its dedication to promoting the best of Cuban dance in this festival focusing on the return of audience favorite Malpaso Dance Company and two more skilled and stylish companies. Malpaso Dance Company of Havana collaborates with top international choreographers and nurtures new voices in Cuban choreography. At The Joyce, Artistic Director Osnel Delgado presents the US premiere of Ocaso, his acclaimed 24 Hours and a Dog, and Bad Winer, a duet choreographed by Trey McIntyre. The program features live music by Grammy Award-winning Cuban-American composer Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble.

DanzAbierta, a precursor to the avant garde dance movement in Cuba, is a landmark of Cuban culture. Founded in 1988 by the renowned dance artist Marianela Boán, DanzAbierta prides itself on breaking boundaries in dance, mixing the genres of modern dance and theater through the use of improvisation and dramaturgical techniques. The company is led by Director and Resident Choreographer Susana Pous, a Spanish artist who couples a strong dance vocabulary with a deep passion for Cuba, and Guido Gali, the company's consultant and technical director.

Irene Rodríguez, one of the most prominent figures in Cuban dance, has created a company rooted in classical Spanish Flamenco which has been presented on prestigious stages throughout Cuba. Merging the dramatic arts, contemporary dance, national rhythms, and anything else that unites both the tradition and modernity of the Cuban character, the company leaves crowds astonished whenever it performs.
