Friday 9th January 2015, Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House

BAILA BRAZIL blends the primal tribal beats of Africa with the passion of the colourful streets of Brazil and the sultry melodies of South America in this exciting night of Afro-Brazilian dance and music.

The 18 strong troupe of dancers and musicians show the diversity of Brazil by incorporating various aspects of the diverse culture. Ranging from religion with their opening dance to Ave Maria, raw rhythm driven dance to drums and soaring chants that could cross African plains, European influences with tutu clad dancer, pop music homage to Michael Jackson's white suit and hat and dance style, the sensual flamenco styles of Latin America, a piece on African slavery and nods to the street culture of expression through dance and music.

The dance styles demonstrate incredible athleticism of the dancers, who, for the most part, dance in only the minimal amount of lycra, showing off the toned bodies. The 90 minute show is filled with a non-stop range of very precise structured dance to what appears to be freeform expression in street style challenges and amazing acrobatics and breakdance techniques. The full stage is utilised and vertical interest is added with dancers taking to the construction scaffolding set. In addition to the dance, the choreography incorporates various props and costumes to create different stories and different moods and add colour and texture.

The dancers are supported by a core band of guitars and keyboard, with dancers providing percussion on suspended steel drums and other various drums and instruments drawn from African and Latin American music. Vocals are predominantly provided by one of two females in the ensemble. Vocals are powerful with warm resonant tones and are well balanced against the drums. The female vocals are supplemented by rap from two of the male dancers for the street inspired components that incorporate breakdance, hip hop and other club dance styles.

This is a powerful expression of the many sides to Brazil and is presented with passion, enthusiasm and energy. It is a fabulous night out for dance lovers, music lovers and anyone wanting a great night out with an international flavour.
