Stretching boundaries with new tap dance technique and choreography, the American Tap Dance Foundation returns with Rhythm in Motion, their yearly showcase of top tappers and contemporary tap dance, April 22 through April 26 at The Theater at the 14th Street Y, NYC. Two programs highlighting the rich diversity of contemporary tap dance will be shown (choreographers and presentation dates below). See promo video here.
Rhythm in Motion features the work of established and emerging choreographers, exemplifying the diversity and groundbreaking choreography driving the art form today. New choreography by tap luminaries Michelle Dorrance, Brenda Bufalino, Derick K. Grant, Chloe Arnold (and more) infuse the five-day, six-performance program.
The American Tap Dance Foundation has been lauded for preserving the history of tap dance as well as inspiring its evolution. Rhythm in Motion is a theatrical platform enabling the art form to present, move forward and grow.
"Rhythm in Motion is a window into a family of voices, reactions, comments, celebrations and explorations of what is going on in the tap dance field today," said Tony Waag, Artistic/Executive Director of ATDF and the show's director and curator. "In December, I received the coveted Dance Magazine Award for my contributions to the art form. Being recognized as an 'ambassador,' I feel obligated to keep presenting work that is literally fresh off the presses so that tap dance continues to expand, evolve and move into the future as it becomes recognized as one of the most exciting and innovative forms of self-expression in the world today.
"It is very exciting that we are creating, witnessing and talking about choreography that challenges the limited perception that tap dance is old-fashioned or too commercial to be taken seriously. And there is so much new work being created right now that needs to be seen and shared with audiences. Full length shows with books and themes are now being developed and presented all over the world. It has been such a pleasure to witness the process that the dedicated Artists in Residence have shared with me at the American Tap Dance Foundation," he said.
"...a vindication, a triumph, a knockout show." (Brian Seibert, NY Times)
"...all-the-way live tap designed with 21st Century tastes in mind... each making a case for tap's continued relevance as hardcore skill and art" (Eva Yaa Asantewaa/InfiniteBody)
"...an infectious dance celebration" (Siobhan Burke, NY Times)
