After a 13-month process Abarukas, a contemporary dance company full of power and communicative dance style, presents No Man is an Island. The world premiere of No Man is an Island is this weekend, January 23 and 24, 2016 at the Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center in Dumbo, NYC. This newly renovated theater, formerly St. Ann's Warehouse, seats 300. Choreographer and founder, Yoshito Sakuraba is no stranger to creating evening-length work. His first full-length piece was performed to sold out audiences at Manhattan Movement and Arts center in 2013.
Sakuraba's inspiration for the piece comes from a powerful titile of the poem ,No Man is an Island, written by John Donne. The choreography drafts storylines of love and loss, reality versus imagination, desolation and desire, timelessness and space. It is a look at the connectedness of the human race, as man is born and exists successfully to live among others.
"When I begin to create something new, I have an urge to challenge myself to make something completely different from what I have done before," said Yoshito Sakurba, Artistic Director of Abarukas. "I've never used pop songs because they were too direct, lyrical and commercial, but for this new work, there is a scene where we dance and mimic a hip-hop song in a most bizarre and untraditional way."
As a young company comprised of nine dancers, Abarukas has already gained notoriety at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out series, Booking Dance Festival, The Dance Gallery Festival, APAP at Peridance, and more. Using contemporary vocabulary as a conduit for storytelling, the ensemble of Abarukas brings an experience of intimacy for audiences. Additionally, his dancer's athleticism and improvisation create conversations engaging to a broad range of spectators.
