ARKONA

BIO:
Arkona (Russian: ??????) is a Russian pagan metal band. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Russian folklore and Slavic mythology, and their music incorporates several traditional Russian musical instruments. The name of the band "Arkona" refers to the last pagan Slavic city-castle. Their singer, also historian and songwriter, Maria "Masha Scream" Arkhipova, is one of relatively few successful female vocalists to sing in a death growl style. Maria "Masha Scream" Arkhipova is married to fellow band member Sergei "Lazar" Atrashkevich with whom she has two children. History: The band was founded in February 2002 by two members of Dolgoprudny Slavic Neopaganism Society: Masha "Scream" Arhipova and Alexander "Warlock" Korolyov. The first name of the band was Giberboreya (?????????? - Hyperborea). In the end of 2002 they recorded the demo Rus' and started giving concerts. They performed with other Russian folk metal bands such as Butterfly Temple, Pagan Reign, Svarga, Rossomahaar. Then the band had a pause because of lack of musicians. Eventually Arkona released their first album Vozrozhdeniye in 2004 and in December of the same year their second album Lepta. In 2008, Arkona signed to the Austrian label Napalm Records and re-published the studio album Ot Serdtsa K Nebu, which had already been released in Russia by Soundage Productions in 2007. Arkona's albums have been widely acclaimed and the band has repeatedly been called one of the best pagan metal acts. All the members except Vladimir "Volk" have another band named "Nargathrond" a Pagan/Goth Rock band that they put on hold since the international success of Arkona. In popular culture: On March 11, 2010, a clip of the song "Yarilo" from Goi, Rode, Goi! was featured on the St. Patrick's Day episode of the U.S. version of the television series The Office. Three (apparently Russian) janitors walked in with the song playing while the workers were still in the office, forced to work late. Members: Maria "Masha Scream" Arkhipova - vocals, keyboards, Sergei "Lazar" Atrashkevich - guitars, Ruslan "Kniaz" Rosomaherov - bass, Vlad "Artist" Lyovushkin Sokolov - synths, drums, Vladimir "Volk" Reshetnikov - wind ethnic instruments
