The York Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce the 2019-2020 season, featuring performances of a variety of classical and popular pieces from the past and present. The 2019-2020 season will offer audiences nine performances, including six Classical Series concerts and three Pops Series concerts.
"Audiences of the York Symphony Orchestra can look forward to an outstanding season of energetic and moving pieces that will evoke a range of emotions," said Lawrence Golan, music director and conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "The York Symphony Orchestra is excited that this new season will highlight some of the most inspired pieces in classical music history penned by some of the most prolific composers from around the world. Additionally, the thread that ties the season together is that a female composer and/or guest artist is featured on every Classical Series concert."
Season subscriptions and Pick 5 packages for the 2019-2020 York Symphony Orchestra season are now available. This year, guests can select Pick 5 packages during the season subscription pre-sale. With the Pick 5 package, guests may create a custom season experience by mixing and matching five performances (Classical or Pops). Season subscription guests have the option of subscribing to the complete Classical and Pops season or selecting the Classical or Pops series individually.
Single tickets - $5 for students and starting at $9 for adults - will be available for purchase in summer 2019. Season subscriptions, Pick 5 Packages and single tickets may be purchased, when available, by calling the Appell Center Box Office at 717-846-1111 or visiting www.yorksymphony.org.

Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff
Oct. 12, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
The York Symphony Orchestra's 2019-2020 season premieres with epic dance works of prized composers from the past to the present. Compositions from Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Frank will infuse resonant tones and an unprecedented level of musical depth. The audience will also enjoy the vivacious and colorful musical sounds of the various pieces.
Made in America
Nov. 9, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
America's storied lands and melting pot of nationalities are featured in this heritage-focused concert. Grammy-winner Joan Tower's Made in America intersperses the patriotic classic, "America the Beautiful," through a journey of perseverance. Looking to the wild west, Copland's folk ballet centers around the tale of westward migration in Billy the Kid. Finally, Dvorak combines his American experiences with longing for his native home in his lyrical and dramatic Cello Concerto in B Minor.
Bolero!

The York Symphony Orchestra will present a musical French pastiche featuring works by Ravel and Debussy. The audience will enjoy iconic harmonies of Debussy's seafaring voyage, La Mer, and symphonic poem, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Van Cliburn Gold Medal-winning pianist Yekwon Sunwoo will perform Ravel's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, and the program concludes with a rousing rendition of the composer's legendary Bolero!.
Rhapsody in Blue

George Gershwin's rhythmically-infused Rhapsody in Blue will transport the audience back to the 1920s jazz age with its boundary-pushing and genre-bending "musical kaleidoscope of America." The audience will also enjoy the rich melodies of Prokofiev's brooding Symphony No. 5.
String Fever
April 4, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
Experience a wave of emotions during this enthralling all-strings performance. The emotional Adagio for Strings by Barber has been noted in The New York Times as the "adagio for the ages." Paying tribute to Mozart, Tchaikovsky weaves a captivating and enchanting melody throughout his Serenade. Finally, Anna Clyne's Within Her Arms, a memento to her departed mother, portrays grief and mourning.
Beethoven's 9th
May 2, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
In celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday, the York Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform Beethoven's final masterpiece, Symphony No. 9. Beethoven's 9th has brought countries together in harmony and in celebration of monumental events in history. The work's enduring grandeur along with the incorporation of Friedrich Schiller's Ode to Joy continues to inspire composers and music enthusiasts everywhere.
Pop Series
Frankenstein: The Original Film with Live Orchestra

Over two hundred years since Frankenstein's inception, the York Symphony Orchestra pays homage to this timeless tale. The audience will enjoy a special screening of the original Boris Karloff Frankenstein film accompanied with live music that was composed in 2001 by Michael Shapiro.
Holiday Pops Spectacular

An annual holiday classic, the York Symphony Orchestra and Chorus commences the yuletide season with their Holiday Pops Spectacular. The audience will delight in familiar holiday tunes and the celebrated sing-along with special guest, Santa Claus.
I Know That Tune: An Evening of Light Classical Favorites
March 14, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
During this performance the audience will hear familiar tunes they never thought they knew. Relish beloved classical gemstones with an appearance by the York Symphony Chorus. From The Thieving Magpie to Bizet's Carmen, these pieces will have you saying "Hey, I KNOW that tune!"
